Question Advice needed fleas

I've hit on a bit of a problem regarding fleas. I'm getting eaten alive and have sprayed everywhere and now treated my kittens twice with a spot on type flea treatment.

I did it about four weeks ago and tonight. Problem is I just can't get the drops of whatever it is onto their skin. They have extremely thick fluffy fur close to their skin it's so thick that I cannot even get a glimpse of skin. With my previous and fairly thick coated cat I had no problem doing this.

So question is what do I do? I'm not a big fan of flea collars for safety reasons as they go out side and like climbing trees. Powders seem a bit of a temporary fix. I've heard that there is a tablet does anyone know much about this eg safety, effectiveness, cost and is it an over the counter or prescription treatment?

I'd really appreciate some help on this as I need a solution before I need to wear a flea collar myself

Re: Advice needed fleas

Can't help regarding the treatment types but you should do the house too especially the kittens' sleeping areas or the fleas will just come back as the eggs are laying dormant there, waiting for a nice warm kitten to bite once they've hatched

Re: Advice needed fleas

There seems to be Programmetabs or amps fpr cats that seems ok to administer to all cats even pregnant ones and kittens taking solid food. For that too doesnt look like you need a prescription.

dont know what you have used for the home, treatment wise, but fleas usually only jump on the animal to feed mostly, they lay the eggs and spen the rest of the time in the environment. When I had a cat too I found Acclaim 2000 was one of the most effective and one application breaks the whole cycle and protects the home up to 12mths too.

I usually get my products from Vet Medic. Ive just looked up in their catalogue and they do both of the above. If you want to check out more details on them

Its not Acclaim Indorex or RIP is it? Acclaim and Indorex do the same thing (Acclaims good can vouch for that not used Idorex or RIP), if its one of those though all are between £11.53 and the £14.29 post free on the link I gave above. I know the Acclaim 2000 does a 3 bed house.

Oh dear, doesn't sound nice at all for you to be bitten as you have been and for kittens to be prey for the fleas. Know what you mean about the thick fur and imagine more difficult to get the drops onto wiggly kittens. Does it easier once you get the knack of it and even if you might get the drops on part of the fur, will still be effective.

Definitely need to get the RIP, Acclaim or the other recommended household spray and treat the house- they do work well.

Can you take kittens to down to your vets tomorrow, maybe ask one of the nurses to help you with the drops, also they can advise on the best for the situation right now. Like you said, flea collars not as effective. We use advocate and also treat with program suspension as well, this is suitable for kittens as well (orange pack), vets will have this and we started ours on it this week in fact, no after effect. Since we have been using this method to tackle fleas from two angles, have never had a problem even with not seeing a single flea latched onto cat's fur. I know some people here may not choose to use chemicals and or tackle in the way we have, however for us, it works and meets our need. I respect where others are coming from, you'll need to work out what's best for you.

I suffer badly with flea bites so we had to take extra precautions and all our cats including kitten are well.

Hope this helps and let us know how you get on with eliminating the wretched fleas.

Re: Advice needed fleas

Hallo
Thanks for the replies I've got some spray for the house and washed and hoovered everything except the cats! The drops seem to have clung more to the fur than anything, so I think I need to see the vet for a more practical solution. Maybe I'm daft but I'm worried that taking flea treatments internally as a tablet might be bad for them. How often do they need treatment of this type?

Re: Advice needed fleas

We had this problem when we moved in to our new house- the previous owners had moved out 3 months previously so the minute we moved in the fleas hatched and bite us. We tried all different sprays and flea bombs which seemed to do the trick for a while as we stopped being bitten but when the kittens came to live with us they got fleas! Our vet recommended we used Frontline as this does not just deflea the cat but the environment around them too- seemed to do the trick in our case. I am sure you are but are you parting the fur at the neck before trying to apply the drops?

Re: Advice needed fleas

Program is a liquid that goes in their food (or the vet can do an injection) It's not a poison, it just sterilises the fleas so they can't reproduce, so it prevents the problem continuing. I gave mine some last night and they didn't even notice it, so I don't think it tastes of anything. You still need something else to kill the existing ones, I found Frontline didn't work but got Advocate from the vet and that seemed to do the trick
