Best food & litter for new kitten
Hi all,
I have a 12 week old male kitten called Mylo. He's very cute! ![]() I've realised that I had some misconceptions regarding the best foods (both on quality and wet/dry - good info here). So I've been doing some reading about what to feed. I've already switched him over to wet food only (which he seems to enjoy). Now I was wondering if you could help me with good foods to use in the UK. I'm happy buying from a shop or online. It's all about quality and value... He's finishing off some Hills that I had and alternating with some Natures Menu. So far from the reading I've done I've come up with the following foods: Natures Menu Natural Instinct Grau Gourmet Animonda Carny Bozita Paté Are these good choices? Are there any good choices that I've missed? I know the Natrual Instinct has to be kept in the freezer, but are all the rest stored at room temperature? With these foods does it matter if he has the kitten version or not? Should I also give him a taurine supplement with these? Also, does anyone have a suggestion of the best/best value clumping clay litter? I'm sorry if these things have been discussed before, I've been doing quite a bit of searching and haven't found the answers I need. Thanks Stephen |

Re: Best food & litter for new kitten
Hi and welcome to the forum
![]() I agree - Mylo is very cute ![]() You seem to have picked a good selection of foods there Clumping litter, I find Cats Best Oko Plus to be good value and a good litter, apart from the issue of tracking but is plant fibre rather than clay. The problem I find with clay is the dust but I'm sure that there are a lot of people here who are happy to use it.

Re: Best food & litter for new kitten
I agree with Lynn - I don't like the clay litter (and for me it has environmental issues) at least with the wood based ones, new trees are able to be grown to replace the ones used - can't say that for clay. I use Oko PLus or Natures Gold (okos big sister) - brilliant litter.
The foods are all great too.

Re: Best food & litter for new kitten
Hi both,
Thanks for the welcome and the quick replies ![]() I'm glad to hear that I'm heading in the right direction with the foods! I'm happy to feed raw. I am a bit restricted on freezer space though, so was thinking about feeding a mixture of all of the above. Natural Instinct say that a fully grown cat only eats 100-120g per day. Is this because it's more filling and contains more energy than 'normal' cat food (ie doesn't have any gravy etc)? Mylo has been eating about 1.5-2 100g pouches per day. Just trying to work out quantities to see how much I can fit in the freezer and how long it'd last. I'd based my decision to use clumping clay litter on info from here. The main concern raised on there was an increased risk of asthma using corn or wheat based litters compared to clay. However, I'm guessing this isn't an issue with a wood based litter. I'm all for being more environmentally friendly as well, so I'll check out Oko Plus and Natures Gold Is there any difference between them? Thanks :-) Stephen |
