neuterintg early

as people know i am getting two wegies in december aged 13 weeks.
the breeder has given me the choice of either them being neutered before i bring them home, in between their vaccs or i can do it when they are older at 6 months old.
my friend was told by a vet once that he would be loathe to neuter early as male cats could have urinary problems later in life.
any ideas?

Re: neuterintg early

I personally would wait for that reason, but there is no evidance to proove it, however one cat who is on cystaid for life is enough for us.

Re: neuterintg early

I understand there are other issues to do with early neutering, such as growth inhibition.

That's why I waited as long as possible (8 months) to neuter my 2 MC boys.
Although as MCs they are supposed to take longer to mature anyway.

apparently the breeder thinks they are more likely to fill out getting neutered early, but it is up to me what i want to do about it. nfcs also takes longer to mature

Re: neuterintg early

Now I dont know what to think!!
Willow is booked in for 16th Dec and she will be about 6 months, a little before. I asked the vet about doing the babies when she is done, as I think it will be easier, and very hard to keep them apart here.
They will be a week off of 4 months - and he said he would do it no problem.
He will be keeping an eye an Holly because of her heart murmur, but said he would def do Rowan the same time as Willow and didnt mention any adverse side affects for then or the future

Re: neuterintg early

I am gonna get Amber done at six months as I don't think it's fair to allow her to come into season. Also they can get Pyometra if not neutered and allowed to go into season!

Midland Veterinary Surgery | Factsheet: Pyometra (pyo or womb infection)

Re: neuterintg early

There are NO studies that back this rumour up but there are studies that show that early neutered boys grow just as well is not slightly larger than their later neutered friends. If the breeder is willing to do it - i'd go for it and get it out of the way. I will be early neutering my kittens when we have them, a vet nearby does then from 8 weeks.

p.s. if you search there were a couple of threads recently (I think in breeding) discussing this whole issue.

Re: neuterintg early

thanks for that spid i will have a look.
its only the boys that she has done before they go to their new home, not the girls for obvious reasons. she told me that another of her kittens she had done and she could see him filling out quicker than normal, but then again he was an only kitten so large anyway.

Re: neuterintg early

If I was given the choice I would neuter early (~12 weeks) regardless of gender. I prefer the quick recovery, reduced risk, less stress etc.
I had my two boys done at 4.5 months and one at least is quite big for the breed and I haven't had any problems with either of them. I'm Australian so I'm quite used to early neutering.
