The main thing is to go for lifetime cover.
Hi

Is it lifetime cover which you have? That would be very cheap, strange...

Re: insurance

Yes, it's lifetime (Harry's used to be £6 a month but went up recently as he's over 8 now). I'm not sure why it's cheap, maybe it depends on vet fees in our area which do, compared to some of what I read on here, seem to be quite reasonable? I think quotes are postcode dependent like car insurance.

Edit looked at certificates and it's actually £11.86 for H and £8.96 for O - this rounding down I do must be why I've never got any money!!

That's a very good price, you are lucky one. I have two exotic ( short-hair persian) kittens, I got quote for them for life cover policy and I got a price 25.25 £ a month.

Re: insurance

I'm just about to take out a policy with Pet Plan and they quoted me, if I remember correctly, about £32 a month for my 3 boys (lifetime policies - 2 kittens and a 2 year old). Bengal and British Shorthair were cheaper but my Burmilla was a fair bit more than the other two. Think it's because Burmillas are on the 'PKD' list.

I work in insurance (not pet) and they do take a lot of things into consideration e.g. postcode as already mentioned by others and the liklihood of certain breeds becoming ill etc. They look at trends and which breeds suffer with what illnesses etc.

It's shame, with PKD for example, that they don't ask when quoting whether the pet has been tested negative (they didn't for any of mine), they just seem to think 'Oh it's a persian, must hike that price up'

Are they insured for their purchase price as well? Mine are moggy kittens so that's not applicable for them and cheapens things considerably I was told.

Re: insurance

Hi

I have just checked on a Pet plan cover for life but for a two moggy kittens and the price was 23.60£ , for two exotic kittens the price was 25.25, so not really big difference. I guess it's more about post code then. Never mind our lovely girls have to have good policy

Re: insurance

I`ve noticed HomeBase have a cover for cats, including whole liife cover, starting at £3-51 a month. I think the important thing is to have SOME insurance at least, then if you find a better company, switch to them.

NO.

That's really dumb advice. If you make a claim, at any point, no other insurer will ever allow you to insure for that incident - accident or illness. So, basically, once you've chosen your insurer you are stuck with them - unless your pet stays totally healthy.

The best thing to do is to get lifelong cover with a company and stay with them. The cheap premium may disguise a heavy excess or a disinclination to pay out (don't, for example, trust E&L).
buffie and Lumboo like this.

You are very right, unfortunately many people don't think much about insurance when they get kitten. Often they just assume that everything will be fine with the young healthy kitten. That's what I thought when we got our first kitten, she was in a perfect condition, she had all vaccination done, she was an indoor cat, you would think she was safe. We chose for her a cheap 12 months policy from Animal Friends, only 6.11 a month. When she was 11 months old she died of wet FIP, we spent over 800 £ just to get diagnosis for her. We got that money back after two months claiming from the Animal Friends and that was good. But this very sad experience with my first kitten made me more aware of how fragile these little pets are, and how many health problems they can develop, even if they are vaccinated and kept indoors, and what's the most important, how high the vet's bills can be. That's why this time I'm getting cover for life for my kittens and Pet Plan seems to be a good choice.
