I really don't know, she just said they needed to do some specialised tests and need to be sent to america so will take longer than usual.

Re: irritable bowel syndrome

Poor little mite but at least everything is done to rule out any non-food related issues. Have you tried a novel protein source yet?

PS: I thought we had labs in the UK now to test for most things. Is there really still a need to send stuff off to the US? Well, apparently so.

Re: irritable bowel syndrome

ok finally got blood tests back and they are all clear! So we still do not know what is wrong, she wants to cut down the vitamin jabs from two a week to one and give him a course of anitbiotics instead.

Re: irritable bowel syndrome

Sorry, missed this earlier. Yes, the B12 injections would have helped with absorption of nutrients hence the weight gain. Wonder if test was for this since now reducing amount?

Antibiotics sounds a far more sensible choice now given the length of time this has gone on for. Which one is he on?

Still on steroids then though I can't for the life of me see why if symptoms still persist?

Re: irritable bowel syndrome

wow it's been so long since I posted here! Ok, so what happened after the course of antibiotics - they didn't seem to have an affect but a day or so after finishing the course his poos became normal , sometimes a little runny but with hard stools in with it, sometimes completely solid but still light-ish in color and been on like this for a good while, so we decided to cut down the steriods a couple of months ago to one every other day and one jab a week of vitamins. So far so good until three days ago when he started being sick and really bad diarrhea again. We first thought he had one of those cat upset stomach things they all get which lasts no longer than 24-48hrs but this is the 3rd day and he doesn't look well bless him, so off to the vets tomorrow.

Sigh just when I thought it was under control this happens his poos are seriously watery, he isn't earing much but drinking, he looks unwell and like I said been sick a few times (fur in it) he also keeps smacking his lips together, not sure if that means anything? Maybe feeling sick?

Anyway i hope it's just a bug and that we are not back at the beginning with this.

Re: irritable bowel syndrome

Aw, sorry to hear things have gone downhill again.
The lipsmacking is a sign of nausea or excess stomach acid, so poor little thing is feeling pretty rough. Hope vet can sort it.

Re: irritable bowel syndrome

Sounds very similar to what riley has gone through, we got his loose poo under control with hills i/d food, then had lovely firm poo.

Last week he was the same being sick lip smacking and generally not well at all, took him back they gave jab for sickness and couple days back to normal.

I've been keeping him in, had poo last night, all quite normal. But his bum looked sore again this morning, no blood from back end but just sore looking.

My vets do not know what it is but suggesting colitis, keeping an eye on him for now, next stage would be camera investigation to see what is going on up there...

Thanks, that is what I thought the lip smacking would be.

Thanks!

Ok, so been to the vet, no temperature which I was surprised at, his teeth need doing again in the near future, he had them done a few years ago but looks like he needs them doing again but we want to get this problem on the mend first so he has given him an anitbiotic injection for his teeth, for now, incase they are giving him trouble.

He has had a sickness injection, I have some tablets for anti acid, he has had another slow releasing anitbiotic incase of an infection. And he has to go back onto his steroids everyday for one week and see if he gets better, if he does then we are going to cut him down again and see if he starts getting more problems and if that happens the vet says he will have to stay on the steriods but at a lower dosage.

So that is where I am at for now, guess we have to see if he responds this week. Ok and his bum is fine not sore at all, he felt all down his throat incase there was a furball trapped, felt him allover and can't feel anything wrong.

Re: irritable bowel syndrome

Riley hissed like hell when he had that sickness jab, but I would have him have it again as was so good at fixing the sickness
