Question Kitten Feeding Advice

Hi

I'm new to this forum and I've been reading the threads about kitten feeding as i'm having problems with my new 13 week old simese kitten. I only picked him up 5 days ago and he was eating okay when I first got him, but he then went totally off his food and was sick a couple of times.

I took him to the vet and he has had about 4 different injections and has tablets from tomorrow morning and special food. He started eating his special food really well this morning and ate about half a packet in small hourly meails, He was also still really playful and lively, but now he is very sleepy and off his food again.

Should I take him back to the emergency vet or can it wait till his follow up appointment in the morning?

He seems really happy in himself and still affectionate and loving i'm just worried about him.

Thanks all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Kitten Feeding Advice

Hi & Welcome to you.
What did the vet say was wrong to give him 4 injections, tablets and special food ? Seems very extreme to me. If you've only had him 5 days, he's probably just finding his feet still. Sometimes they go off their food a bit.
If you are worried I would take him back to your vets in the morning, unless you think it can't wait, then yes take him to the emergency one.

Hi the vet said he had a slight temp it was 39.2 and normal apparently is 38.5/6 so he had an antibiotic injection, an antiinflam injection to lower his temp, something called zantec to coat his tum, he had that twice, once at the emergency vet and once at my regular vet. He starts a course of antibiotics tomorrow.

The vet suspects he may have picked up a slight tummy bug, but he's not got any problems with loose stools, in fact he was slightly constipated and had to have katalax on Sunday.

I'm just worried I'm panicing and not letting him settle in properly as in thr 5 days I've had him he's been to the vet 3 times, its costing me a small fortune, thank heavens he's insured.

isn't katalax for hairballs?? or am i getting mixed up here due to lack of sleep? lol xx

could have been an infection - i had a girl into me last year who had temp and wouldn't eat, threw up x was also constipated x

she just had an antibiotic injection and within 2 days she was lively, eating and no more troubles with it xx

Re: Kitten Feeding Advice

He could have caught a minor tummy bug. I would say trust your instincts with him, but it doesn't sound as though it is anything major. If he is still drinking and not being constantly sick or having violent runs, and thus loosing lots of fluid and in danger of becoming dehydrated, he doesn't sound like an emergency. Him being a bit more sleepy today could be the after affect of the stress of going to the vet yesterday added to the fact he is still recovering from a little bug, if thats what he has. Did your vet say what he thought was wrong with him?

If he is still happy in himself again that doesn't sound too bad either. If he was non responsive and listless then that would be a worry

Have you spoken to his breeder? They should be a source of support for you as well. New babies are always a worry.

Re: Kitten Feeding Advice

Ahhh, bless him. Give him a couple of days. Especially as you have some tablets to give him anyway. Then see how he goes. As we've all said, if you are worried the vet won't mind you getting back in touch

His breeder is excellent, a great support and I was going to contact her but I didn't want to worry her unnecessarly, but I regert not contacting her now and I'm sure she would have put my mind at rest.

The Vet said it was a slight tummy upset probably picked up from one of my other cats, shedding was to be expected.

Think I'm just a very over cautious and protective mum because he is so special to me.

Re: Kitten Feeding Advice

I would definitely contact his breeder and let her know, she would definitely want to be involved I am sure. You have to watch vets sometimes they can be a tad 'over zealous' and she maybe able to help you through that

It is very common for kittens coming into households with exisiting cats to contract something minor. Its like kids going to school for the first time. Every household has minor bugs that their occupants are immune to, but a new addition isn't.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head with the vet being over zealous, and I have now been in contact with his Breeder and I'm feeling much calmer now, she will certainly be my first call in the future.

He's my first ever baby kitten, my other cats I adopted at 6 months old and both were re-homings so I think they had got through the minor bug stage, so its all new to me at the moment.

Chatting on here and to his breeder has really helped me.

Thanks everyone
