Angry Total Nightmare

Well my poor little baby boy is now in hospital , but I should be able to pick him up in the morning Thank God

I've been talking to his breeder and my Mum (a very experianced dog breeder) and we all tend think that the Vet has totally over-reacted to what sounds like a very simple tummy bug.

They have taken him in to do a number of blood tests including Feline Aids and Lukemia (sp!) which the Vet actually told me he was 99.9% would come back clear (which it did) I'm at a total loss where he thinks he could have picked them up from! .

Also they have put him on a drip and he's not even de-hydrated and they reeled off a load of other tests, they want to do.

I know he has lost a little weight (30g) and he has been sick a few times (4 times over 5 days), and hasn't really been interested in wet food, he has however still been eating his RC BabyCat and drinking plenty of water. He has no bottom problems and has continued to run around like a lunatic, play and being loving. His eyes are clear and his nose is still wet and cold.

I've now lost all faith in my Vet now and as soon as this over I'm going to move all my cats to another vet, so any recommendations for a reliable and trust worthy vet in Stockport would be greatly accepted.

I'm totally exhausted and worried sick. Also I was supposed to be taking my Mum to the Supreme tomorrow as a Birthday Treat but I now won't be able too attend.

As well as feeling exhausted, worried i'm not really angry as I feel my Vet has played me for an idiot!

Re: Kitten Feeding Advice

Its a common problem unfortunately. Go to any new surgery and their first question is "are you insured". If the answer to that is "yes" then you can almost see them rubbing their hands together.

If you are not happy with any treatment they suggest, you are perfectly within your rights to say no! If Nero has been running around and playing he doesn't sound dehydrated or particularly ill. If you don't want him to have any additional tests then tell them enough is enough and you will see how he gets on and if there is an on going problem then you will think about it. I would say if you are not happy about him being on a drip now and left there over night, ask to go and get him at the end of surgery and take him home. Its a tough one, but if you are not happy you are their customer at the end of the day.

I would definitely look for another vet, I can't help you in your area though I am afraid.

Do you know "is he insured" was actually the first thing they did ask, then even asked if it was a policy that had lifetime cover and what company. I'm going to say i'm not insured next time.

I just don't know what to do for the best now, If I bring him home tonight and then have to take him back again tomorrow that just going to put the poor little guy under more stress, which is the last thing I want to do, so I'm tempted to just leaving him for tonight and then get him first thing.

I've been investgating online and also I've got a cat breeder friend that I'm going to speak to and find out which vet she uses.

Thanks for your advice...it's been really helpful.

Re: Kitten Feeding Advice

I am not a vet, and he may well have spotted something else, but a kitten with no runs, eating - OK not a great deal but eating (hopefully the special diet he gave you was a wet food!), drinking and only having been sick 4 times in the last 5 days, is not going to be dehydrated Maybe the vet has been thrown a bit because he is a meezer and he is not used to their body types

Well hopefully this is the end of it for you. You can pick him up tomorrow and he will be OK, no more sickness. Once he gets back to eating properly he will make up that 30gms no problem and then some.

Poor Nero has had quite a week, so have you ((hugs))

Re: Kitten Feeding Advice

Hugs to you and baby Nero.

I have to say that I'm so cynical of vets - and I wish that wasn't the case, as I'm sure there lots and lots of really great ones out there.....just haven't run across any!

This summer Alaska and Baggy caught a tummy bug. Alaska was hit harder and went off her food for a few days. I took her for a precautionally visit to the vets who told me that she wasn't dehydrated but they wanted to take some bloods anyway. I went home with Alaska and waited for the results. The vet phoned up and said that he was concerned as there was an increased white blood cell count - OMG!!!! "But what does that mean?" I panicked, and he explained that her immune system was 'compromised' and that it might have always been this way and that it was something that we would have to live with. He said that they wanted to run further tests for Leukemia and Feline Aids (snap, that's what you got too!). I was terrified, on the verge of tears waiting the results. But an hour later they came back clear - phew, and I asked him what he thought was wrong, "Oh well, it's probably just a stomach bug" he said. "But what about the white blood count and the compromised immune system?" - "Oh, that's nothing to worry about, it will probably come down on it's own". Turns out, Saikou kindly informed me of this, that actually it's perfectly natural that there would be an elevated white blood count because that's what the body does when fighting an infection! Anyway, drama over, it was just a plain old tummy bug....and a large vet bill! So my point is, sometimes they have a way of complicating a situation. I don't have a problem with the whole 'it's better to be safe than sorry' approach to testing (within reason), but you do have to wonder how much of that is motivated by genuine concern and how much is motivated by profit.

One in a very large well known Pet Supply Store, something similar to "pets in the house". I've never had any problems with them before but they have really knocked me for six now.

Hi

Thanks for the advice, I knew I recongnised your user ID and now you have said your cats are Alaska and Baggy...you have them on you tube don't you? The one of Alaska in her cat box being told to come in is one of my all time favourite you tube clips and I watch it at least once a week and Baggy is such a handsome boy.

I feel like I'm talking to a famouse person

Thanks
