kitten with problems

hi ive got a 8 month old kitten with a few problems and was wondering if anyone could help me please.

i brought her from a pet shop who sell the cats when they get to 650grams and they said she was 6 weeks old but we suspect she was a lot younger (she doesnt clean herself), and ever since day 1 she has had diarrohea so i changed her from james wellbeloved to whiskers and she still had the runs so i changed her to pets at homes own brand of gluten, wheat, dairy and soya free but she still has the runs on and off everyday the poo is different. her bottom is red and inflamed and i have to clean her after every toilet coz she doesnt do it and i put savlon cream on her to stop the inflammation.

she is a house cat who never goes out and i keep my adult cats food away from her (they are fed in seperate places).

im at a real loss and need a bit of help.

other than the problem mentioned she is very happy and playful her eyes are bright and her teeth are very clean and she is a beautiful little kitten.

Re: kitten with problems

what has your vet said about the poo? thats a long time.

is she vaccinated & wormed?

you could try her on boiled chicken with some of the water left on it.

Re: kitten with problems

Has she been seen by a vet about this? If not it is high time to get a stool sample done for parasites/bacteria. Also, personally, I wouldn't use savlon on my cats.

Re: kitten with problems

ive cooked her boiled rice and that was making her poo green with bits of rice still in it.

she is pooing regular i always check and the blood only seems to be in the morning poo's but not every morning poo.
the poo isnt like water but soft i took her to the vet and he said it could just be a reaction.

her next load of worming is due tomorrow and he said savlon cream or sudocream is ok to put on her.

Re: kitten with problems

If this were my cat then I would either go back to the vet tomorrow and just demand that further action gets taken, one of which is a stool sample, or I would just find a new vet.

This has gone on far too long if it has pretty much happened every day for the past half year. Your kitten is growing and by the constant type of diarrhoea she might not be getting all of the nutrients that she needs as food is just going through her. So, it really needs to be addressed.

Personally, instead of just indiscriminately worming her tomorrow I would take her to a vet and get it investigated further. They might just worm her there and then or they might want to get a stool sample done first to see what they are dealing with.

One thing to keep in mind is that worming itself is a stress on the system and it should always be done cautiously in kittens and cats who have a long-standing problem with diarrhoea IMO.

You might also want to talk to the vet about some probiotics to help rebuild the gut flora that will pretty much be shot after all the months of problem poop.

Also, did you just feed rice or chicken and rice? I am not sure whether her problem is dietary, again further investigations will shed some light on it but it might perhaps be prudent to just feed chicken or some white fish with no rice.

But instead of tinkering with her diet some more I would seek vet advice and action asap.

Re: kitten with problems

Personally I would get her off Whiskas and eventually onto a higher quality food - preferably grain free - cats can't metabolise grains (even rice) so not good for them. Put her onto a boiled chicken with the stock ONLY diet for at least 4/5 days and see how she goes. Don't add any thing to the chicken - literally just boil it in water and give some of the water at the same time as the chicken. Once she is solid again then you can start to SLOWLY reintroduce a better quality food. In the meantime I would test for gardia and tritrich as well.
Misi and Anca like this.

Re: kitten with problems

i cooked some brown rice thinking its better than normal rice and i wasnt sure whether to put chicken in it.
my older cat had this problem and im guessing that they have same parents and the shop is putting all the adult cats together and letting them mate.
my older cat is settled and has been for ages since i put her on the own brand of tesco food but the little one didnt like it.

i will make a stand tomorrow at the vets and get her sorted and id like to see what really goes on in the shop where i brought her.

Re: kitten with problems

ok i will take a fresh one with me

in reply to spid she is on pets at home own brand of food which is soya, dairy, wheat and gluten free i was mixing a spoonfull of this into her rice so she would eat it and she eats it all and is drinking the same amount as my adult cats are.

i was just reading up on them problems and will my vet add loads of extra ££££'s to look at her poo and will he say she needs an operation etc and try to rip me off?

Re: kitten with problems

I had a cat years ago with the same problem, the vet said that she had a bacteria in her large bowl, not the small. You can treat the small with antibiotics, but not the large! So he put her on steroids and it worked a treat
