Exclamation Why does my cat...

Hi

For quite a while now my 11 year old female cat hardly goes outside and never does the toilet outside either, she always used to but now only uses the litter tray and when she does go out she stays near the house (in the back garden)

I've noticed every time she has something to eat she goes straight to her litter box and does the toilet

Anyone know why this is?

Thanks

Re: Why does my cat...

Sounds to me like she does not feel comfortable/safe in the garden any more. I think she is losing her claim to her territory, due to her age. Did any younger cats move into the neighbourhood recently?

I had a similar problem with my 2 queens Steffie and Tuppence. When they got older, the younger neighbourhood cats took over their territory and even bullied them out of their own garden. That is when we adopted 2 younger toms, Jiskefet and Catweazle, who reclaimed the garden and made it possible for the ladies to enjoy the outdoors again.

Catweazle would even actively protect the girls.....

Re: Why does my cat...

Well there's a dog in the same street that she is very scared of, it chased her up a tree a few months ago and as shes getting older it was hard for her to get down and she hurt herself from hanging on the tree.

We have another 10 y/o male cat who is our female cats son, they don't really get on but can still be around each other etc and eat beside each other

I'm just worried as to why she does the toilet every time she eats, is this normal?
thanks

Re: Why does my cat...

Did she used to go out fairly soon after her meals before? Could be that its normal for her and because she is in you are noticing it.

Is she eating a large meal or eating a small amount and going straight away? what are her poos like? Colour, consistency are they formed, soft, loose?

If its like the food is going straight through her that would be concerning

Re: Why does my cat...

My cats who are 11 and almost 11 hardly ever go out these days and if they do they don't go far! I think it's an age thing. They just want to be tucked up in the house in their fave spots!!

Re: Why does my cat...

Can't even remember if she would go out right away now...
But her poos look fine, formed and brown normal colour

I think it's normally after eating wet food

Re: Why does my cat...

It does sound that the formation of the poo is fine and if she is well in herself other than the scary dog moment, not losing / gaining weight or anything else noticable, maybe just keep an eye on things - a diet and poo diary maybe.

if you are still uneasy maybe repost with 'poo' in the title so that other people see the thread.

Re: Why does my cat...

Hi,
I have two female cats and one of them uses the litter tray almost immediately after meals to poo. The other cats does the same, some time later, especially after I had cleaned the toilet

Does your cat have diarrhea? I wouldn't worry too much if your cat is otherwise healthy.
As for not using the toilet outside, I wouldn't worry either. My cats have never wanted to misuse my garden as a toilet.
