If you are sure that he is picking up the fleas next door it might be an idea to co-ordinate a defleaing day with the neighbours - if both premises & all cats were treated at the same time you might be able to limit his exposure to fleas.

It wasnt til they told me thy had an infestation, solo was sleeping on the bed and the vet said flea allergy that it all suddenly slotted into place!

On the advice of Ianthi, I picked up the L-Lysine tablets from Holland & Barrett - approx £7 for 60 tabs (I think.....) of 500mg strength, own brand.

I give half a tab daily, squashed between 2 soup spoons to make it into powder and then mix it with a bit of food to be consumed.

I tried to use tea-spoons for squishing and spent more time chasing the tablet around the kitchen. It cannot escape the clutches of the soup spoons though!!!!

I hope all this helps your little man to get better very soon.

Thanks so much!

Have you seen a difference? And does it have a taste? I can gget most things into my foody boys but there are particular things that they can identify within a mile - Drontal worming tablets are one, lost count of the amount I wasted before swapping to spot on stuff!

Re: Flea allergy and using garlic

Hi, I'm wondering if you have tried Program anti-flea treatment for your cat?

It's a vaccination, which acts by interrupting the life cycle of the flea, so the fleas are made sterile and thus unable to breed. This means that although the odd flea or two may jump on to the cat, the fleas won't be able to colonise his fur. So as you are combing him daily you will catch the odd flea or two in the flea comb. The vaccine is given every 6 mths.

One of my cats recently had an adverse reaction to Effipro (he got intense pruritis all over his body for several days after being treated) and the vet has suggested next time my cat has the Program treatment instead. She said she uses it for her cat and finds it very effective, particularly where other treatments haven't worked.

The vet said her cat had not suffered any side effects from the Program, but I haven't yet had a chance to do any research on possible side effects, and am wondering if anyone here can speak of their experience with Program

Definitely do not give garlic to a cat
About 25 yrs ago I gave it as a flea repellant to one of the cats I had at the time, and it made her quite ill, including losing control of her bowel. This was a time before people (incl vets) were generally aware of the potential toxic effects on cats of things like garlic and onion.

However, if you are planning on going abroad to a country where malaria is a risk, then eating lots of garlic is a very effective way of keeping the mozzies from biting you.

p.s. empty gelatine capsules are very useful for putting the powder in then popping it straight down the cat's throat. They can be bought cheaply in bulk online.

I am never having the pill down throat struggle again! Absolute nightmare, fur everywhere, scratches, panic and frantic death-struggle because clearly I was trying to kill them... clearly.

Ive heard of the injection, a few people have mentioned it and said Vets are not keen on it these days. Not sure why though. Perhaps because its cheaper! (PS i have nothing against vets at all, its just so expensive)

I wouldn't say I have seen a difference as such as I give to him to enhance his immune system which was compromised when he had cat flu as a kitten. I don't think it can taste too bad as I mix it in with a small bit of food and he eats it up just fine.

Then again, he might just be a greedy wee Horace who eats anything.....
