Question Raw Game

As I've mentioned recently, we're trying to get Icarus into eating raw when we can. We've got the chicken wings down to a fine art now, he's happily chomping down the skin, the bones, the whole thing.

We were pottering about in Waitrose today (don't normally go there sadly, but felt the need to stock up on squashes while they're in season. Oh, the squashes! The Beard is going to be thoroughly sick of them by the time Winter rolls around...) and spotted some partridge breast on special offer. I picked a pack up, figuring it's time to try and get Icarus into eating other types of meat, then it dawned on me - will he eat it? Is it okay for him? Am I just worrying over nothing?...

Re: Raw Game

Yes it is fine for him, but I might freeze it for a couple of weeks first to kill parasites. yes he might eat it....some cats love game, others are not so fussed. My gang are trying wood pigeon today.

Re: Raw Game

He should eat it, mine have pigeon, rabbit, venison & other game birds. A lot of people say you should freeze before feeding, not sure if this actually does anything. I hope he does like it great to get variety into his diet. This a great time or year for game

Re: Raw Game

I would definitely freeze first to kill of any potential parasites. Better safe than sorry I love this time of year with all of the game bounty on offer.

Re: Raw Game

Did you feed the game in the end? How did it go down?

Not yet, I've whacked it into the freezer for the time being. I will give it to him soon though! He has started to really look forward to getting his chicken wings (he goes bonkers as soon as I get it out of the fridge) so I rather hope he'll take to this without issue!

Out of curiosity, what meats do everyone's kitties like the most? What do they dislike? As mentioned, I'd love to transition Iccy onto raw but it's really important to me that he'll eat everything I put in front of him, especially if I've gone to great lengths to work out how much of what he needs...

Re: Raw Game

Favourite for everyone is rabbit, if they are young they will eat most things, I even heard of kittens eating tripe - not in this house though!

Dislikes, too many gizzards, and no one was overkeen on pheasant.

Fussy cat doesn't trust anything still wearing its fur or feathers but will eat it without.

If theres something they are not sure of mix it in with something they like.

Thanks! I really want to get Icco on to some Rabbit. Here's a long and complicated explanation:

The Beard and I are both vegan. While I've no problem feeding my cat meaty foods (I am vegan for animal welfare issues after all, and what would be worse for my animal's welfare than denying him his natural diet?), I do feel bad for contributing to the farming industry that I strive to avoid in my day-to-day life. Quite apart from being the best thing for him, if I can get my boy onto a raw diet I have far greater control over where his meat comes from. To my mind, game is probably the most ethical meat I can give him, although I also plan to feed other meats from local "proper" free-range farms.
