Intestine Tumour

Hi

I was wondering if anyone had any advice they could give me.

My 10 year old 'baby' has a tumour in his intestine as as he has f.i.v. its not advisable to operate as it would never heal, i understand this but i am worried about his happiness. The vet has advised me that its a matter of weeks or months before he needs to be put to sleep, but he seems very sad just now and hasnt slept at all today, we only found out the new this afternoon.

I have another cat in the house and she has hissed and growled at him all day and i dont know whether this is having an impact on his happiness either, id rather he be put to sleep than live the next few weeks or months miserable.

If anyone could give me any advice i would be very grateful

Thanks

Re: Intestine Tumour

Hiya!

The vet has said he isnt in any pain and wont feel any due to where it is.

The steriod and anit biotic she has given him has made him seem like himself again, its like giving me false hope as i know he is really really poorly, i keep hoping for a miracle thats not going to happen.

I spoke to my vet about my other cat acting strange around him and she said that when cats leave the vets surgery, they have a different smell so my other cat wont have recognised him and thought it was a new cat.

I dont even know anything about intestine tumours or how long they take to develop, im looking at him now and he is staring at me and purring away, i just cant believe he is so ill and he is only 10 so not even that old

Re: Intestine Tumour

Have you asked your vet whether chemo is an option? Some tumours respond very well to chemo and cats do not suffer effects from it as we do. That said it is very expensive if he isn't insured. You could ask your vet to speak to the Animal Health Trust, they have a specialist oncology unit that would be able to advise your vet as to whether there were other options available to you.

My friends siamese was diagnosed with lymphatic sarcoma. Its very common in young siamese, but is one of the cancers that responds really well to chemo. Her vet told her all they could do for him was steroids and palliative care. If she had not heard of other cats being treated she would never have known about it, and instead of being a healthy 4 yr old with no cancer, he would not have seen his 2nd birthday.

Thats one cancer that does respond well to chemo, they don't all, so it may not be an option, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Good luck, your Baby is lucky to have such a caring Mum. Btw if he has recently come back from the vets that maybe why your other cat is being funny towards him, he will smell funny.
