Is my cat over weight?

My British Blue Shorthair female is 10 months old and weighs 4kg. She has wet food twice a day and during the day I put a bowl down with some dry. She is fed on a good quality wet and her dry is James Wellbeloved. I only give her a handful of dry food which I leave down for an hour or so. Wet food, She eats at the most 1-1 1/2 pouches a day. She isn't a big wet food eater.

Is she over weight for her age? She is an indoor cat. I am considering trying a dry food for indoor cats, can anyone recommend one?

Re: Is my cat over weight?

It's not really possible to say from weight alone however BSH's are a large breed so 4kg's at 10 months doesn't sound particularly alarming to me. Have a look at the body conditioning guide below to make a reasonable assessment:

Mine is 3 years and about 6kg. Evryone says he is fat because they keep comparing him to other cats. He is also a BHS. I give him wet morning and night and dry during the day, I want to change the dry but so far no luck.

Re: Is my cat over weight?

Two of my cats are just over 4 kg, medium build. They are 3 and 6 years old. They are definitely not overweight.
I think your kitty is fine weightwise.

Re: Is my cat over weight?

Thank you all for your help.

I am trying to change her over to a grain free dry food, not sure if she will be happy about it.

I get this constantly from people as well, infact the vet I was registered with was always on about Blue's weight so much to the point that I decided to change vets, they even had the cheek to say that Treacle was a bit on the portly side, which is a joke as she is light as a feather.

I sometimes think certain vet's need to read about & get clued up on the various cat breed description's.

Re: Is my cat over weight?

BSH's tend to be a stocky breed, so she's probably fine.

If it makes you feel any better, Blake is 4.2kg at 5 months! He's a moggy, but I really think he has a fair amount of MC in him (or another big fluffy breed like NFC, but MCs are more common and thus more likely to have). He was just neutered Monday, and they had to shave his stomach because of a retained testicle. He is not fat in any possible way. He's just going to be a Monster Mog

Re: Is my cat over weight?

Hi!
I read a sign in the vets this morning about overweight cats. A major thing is if their tummy "hangs" down a bit? Thats defo a sign, also if you cant see her waist that is also a sign. At such an age, I wouldnt worry too much!

Re: Is my cat over weight?

Cats who used to be overweight tend to have surplus skin and will show a hanging tum and no waist, but it will be all skin and no fat.
I have a cat like that, Josje (who is probably BSH, or at least part BSH) , and 2 most definitely overweight moggies.
Unfortunately, there is little I can do about them, without starving the others, unless I lock them all into seperate rooms for feeding time.

Especially Wobbel is hard to keep away from the other cats' food. Can't say I blame him, he lived on the streets for 2 years......

Re: Is my cat over weight?

I know what you mean Mezzer, first time I took Merlin to the vet she said too much wet food, had to watch his weight etc. I thought, dont compare him to other breeds.
