My Cat Lucy
Ok, Lucy is ten and had kittens when she was around 2/3 years old after she had kittens we had her spaded but she never lost her fat deposits. Since up to a couple of months ago she looked like a constantly heavy pregnated cat. When we asked the vets about her over the years they said this sometimes happens and sometimes they go away on their own. Well they did around two months ago but since then her behaviour has changed, she is constantly hungry, always catching her in the bin, there is always food available but she always wants my dinner or trying to get the bread and cakes out the cupboards. Has a thing for cereal even. She was such a quiet cat before now she is always up to something.
She uses the litter try fine and her appetite is very good but the past couple of days she has been very quiet and looks like her eyes are squinting but still eating a lot but then goes to a quiet place and don't see her for hrs again. I have only just got her insured on wednesday so kind of hoping she does not decline, of course if she stops eating or gets worse I will take her to the vet asap. But trying to hold off because the policy is not valid until after two weeks of taking it out. I'm not sure why I am posting I guess was just wondering if you have heard of cats keeping their pregnancy weight for years before? And any thoughts on her behaviour. |

Re: My Cat Lucy
Ask vet to check her thyroid function. Increased appatite couple with loss of weight can be symptoms of over active thyroid. The test involved is a simple blood test and if it shows a problem it can be treated in three ways, radioactive injection (not avaliable at all vets and cat will need hospitalising for a time) thyroid removal op or the more conservative medication route. Good luck hope your cat is ok xxxx

Re: My Cat Lucy
Agree it HT sounds very likely given her age and symptoms. It's very important to treat this condition as soon as possible owing to the damage uncontrolled hyperthyroidism can cause to other organs ie heart and kidneys. So frankly I wouldn't wait until the insurance kicked in-the bloodtests aren't all that expensive for one thing!

Re: My Cat Lucy
Ok, so took her to the vets, firstly she checked her eyes by covering one and zooming in with her other hand on the other, the left was fine as she kept closing her eyelid but on the right she did not close the eyelid. So she said her vision does not seem good in that eye and that maybe she was going blind. But then she checked with a light and the pupils in both eyes retracted normally when the light was shined into the eyes. So then she said she wasn't quite sure but the right eyelid did seem swollen as well.
She said her teeth was bad and suspects this is what is behind the eyes, weight-loss and eating habbits. She gave her an antibiotic injection and 30x prednicare 5mg tablets and has to have one daily. I also have to give her some metacam later. She wants to see how she goes and she said to bring her back a week on friday for some bloodtests. If she does not improve. So I am kind of at a loss and really concerned she maybe going blind in one her her eyes?! ![]() edits: Also forgot to say ever since she got back from the vets she is very unsteady on her feet. :/ Last edited by carmelauk; 17-10-2011 at 06:50 PM.. |

Re: My Cat Lucy
sigh, she has got worse all night, it's now 1:30am and she has just come from behind the sofa, can hardly walk was sick twice. She managed to get to the litter tray but to weak to stand I had to hold her. She has no energy, looks like she is on deaths door.
walks a couple of paces and just flops down. I've lost my oldest and youngest this year and now I am dreading that something is seriously wrong with her. |

Re: My Cat Lucy
Missed your earlier post. Sorry to hear this. How is she now? Did she actually have a Metacam injection at the vets? Did they take her blood pressure?
Frankly, I'm not convinced teeth are at the root of the main problem here - more likely hyperthyroidism and I'm not taking these recent symptoms into account! |

Re: My Cat Lucy
I'm not sure of the injection they gave her was metacam but I have just took her to the vets and seen a different vet this time. He says there is a lot more going on here than teeth. He says he thinks her kidneys are giving up and she looks to far gone to do anything about it. I am waiting for blood tests right now. Should have them within the hr. I think his doing the blood pressure too, i will check.

Re: My Cat Lucy
Glad to hear you've seen a different vet! The first one should really have run a bloodtest. The recent symptoms sound to me like a definite reaction to a medication- and since Metacam is likely (it's important to know which one ) so I'd make a point of requesting this information.
Hopefully the vets will be able to diagnose and treat the problem. IF it is renal ( though I've my doubts this was the case before the vet visit ) a few days on fluids should help a lot! So don't give up on her just yet! Hope she's better really soon! |
