Unhappy Kitten has diarrhea.

Hi guys, it's me again.

For the past three or four days, Petra has had diarrhea. It doesn't seem to have any frank blood in it, although I did find a drop on the side of the litter pan once - not again so far.

It appears normal in colour but it does stink quite a bit. She has to go to the litter pan two-three times a day and I clean it as often as possible in case she needs it again soon.

The diarrhea might have been cause by some roast chicken that my mum gave her thinking it wouldn't hurt her, I know she shouldn't have.

She doesn't have any other symptoms, although she sleeps a lot the past week - but she's really energetic once she wakes up so I am not that worried about it (should I be?)

She definitely hasn't eaten anything bad, she hasn't been outside so far and she hasn't been in contact with any other animals. We also haven't gotten her vaccines yet, when is the right age to get her vaccined and should I take her to the vet for this?

Any help appreciated, thank you.

Re: Kitten has diarrhea.

Poor baby, afraid i am not sure when she should have her jabs, not owned a cat for years...i am guessing about 12 weeks? but don't take my word for it.

How old is she? Have you wormed her? it could be the roast chicken, her system might not be used to it.
I would call the vets to be on the safe side xxx

Re: Kitten has diarrhea.

vaccines are normally done at 8/9 weeks then again 3 weeks later
how old is she?

make sure she is drinking enough - kittens can go downhill very quickly. I would take her to the vet if its more than a couple of days.

Re: Kitten has diarrhea.

Vaccines will be preceded by deworming. Normal deworming does not remove all gastrointestinal parasites (e.g. Isospora), because this is what I suspect in your kitten, as per your description. You will be more lucky if it is Toxocara, Giardia is something that is eliminated with a lot of treatment, and Isospora ... the cats will have to live with them and be controlled through nutrition.

I recommend you to take stool samples to make the parasitological test. At least three different times, every three days. Some intestinal parasites will not show their ugly faces at the first test. In the meantime, until you get exact results ... boiled chicken chest meat and boiled rice. No salt, of course.

If the stool is watery, this is an emergency (to me, only the simple presence of blood and the stinky stool means an emergency). Run to your vet, he'll prescribe some medicines (don't give the cat a medicine that hasn't been prescribed, it can be worse than without it).

If your cat is very young, you must be really careful with diarrhea, they dehydrate very quickly and it's a danger for their lives.

Since when do you have the poor darling?

PS. I personally don't believe the roast chicken was the "guilt".

Re: Kitten has diarrhea.

Thanks for replying everyone.

We haven't taken her to the vet yet (big mistake I know ) but I will make sure we take her soon.

She drinks a lot of water and she was just drinking plenty a few moments ago. About her diet, my dad got some kitten dry food, is it good for her? It's got special nutrients for her growth or something, I am not 100% sure, he bought it for her from a pet food place.

I've had her since late August.

Re: Kitten has diarrhea.

Dry food may (or may not) help in diarrhea cases. It depends what brand it is. I've already said what I would cook for her above, it only takes you 5 minutes to put it on the cooking machine and 30 minutes until completely boiled. Very very easy recipe and the effects are positive.

It's strange, because you have her for more than a month, you've kept her indoor, and she hasn't had such episodes before. The possibility of having parasites is large anyway, kittens are born with them, it's just the way it is.

Has she had access to any flower or plant? These also may cause diarrhea, but not with blood, and they are always accompanied by vomiting so, no ... don't think it's that.

Hi Anca. Thanks for replying. I'll see when I can get her the chicken breast food.

We don't have any plants indoors, so that can't be it anyway.

Also, I've noticed that today she's been sleeping a lot- as well as yesterday. Could this mean that this is more serious than I thought? I asked my mum when we can get her to a vet and she said maybe Tuesday. :/

Hi, DragonGirl, so sorry I didn't have time to sign in the forum yesterday. Because time is crucial for your cat!!!

I understand you, it's very hard to have a pet and depend on somebody else (your mum) when you need to do the right thing about the pet. I was in your situation and I lost a dog and a cat.

You must insist (even play a little with your mum's feelings, you know better at what she may respond) that the cat is taken to a vet sooner. And ... NO "MAYBE" for an answer. Ask your mum: "If I were sick, wouldn't you take me to the doctor? The kitten has also a soul, like all of us, she doesn't need to be punished just because she's an animal".

DragonGirl, no, it is not good at all that the kitten sleeps so much. How many times does she go to the litter tray? What is the consistency of the stool? At her age, she should not go for the "solid thing" more than two times a day. She probably sleeps so much because she's already dehydrated and it would be an effort for her to play, as other kittens do at this age.

I can recommend you a medicine, which is very cheap, but this after you answer how often she goes to the litter tray to do the feces (stool) and what the consistency is. Any trace of blood? The blood is red or dark red?
