Question House extension - advice please!

We are planning on building a 2 storey extension on the side of our house (currently awaiting planning permission and thinking of starting building around March 2012). We are worried about the affect this will have on our 2 cats with the disruption and noise. They are both indoor and outdoor cats (they come and go as they please but generally stay in at night), one is 10, the other only 1.
Should we put them in a cattery for some or all of the building works (about 5 months!!) or see how they are when it starts?
Has anyone had a similar experience? Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks.
