Teeth advice please

My Toby - 1yr old Tonk - has got really bad breath, I have had a look in his mouth and his teeth are quite dirty and his gum lines are a bit red.

I am going to phone the vet on Monday and see about getting him in to have them cleaned but I don't like the idea of him having an anaesthetic if it is not 100% necessary.

Is there any other way I could try to clean them for him or any product I can use to help him keep them cleaner.
I thought that the dry biscuits were supposed to help them and stop their teeth from getting too gunked up. I have tried him on raw food to see if he would use the bones to clean his teeth but he wont even look at it.

If a dental clean is the only option what sort of cost am I looking at - it doesn't matter 'cos I would pay anything to keep him healthy but I just wanted a rough idea. He is insured but I don't think they cover dental issues - I will have to check on that.

Thanks guys xxx

Hi T & D

Sorry to hear that I'm not sure if it's good or bad but Hills do an oral care food that you can add to their usual dry food. Not sure if this will help but maybe worth a try? Hope this helps hun

Re: Teeth advice please

He has a really sensitive tummy and we tried him on hills when he was younger but it didn't agree with him at all. I would be reluctant to try it again at the moment just incase it upsets his tummy again.

Thanks for the advice though xx

Re: Teeth advice please

Hi have you tried some lint wrapped around your finger & some pet toothpaste gently massage his teeth & gums? NOT WHILE HE HAS GUM ETC PROBS, sometimes bad breath, teeth & gums may be a sign of other probs, take him to the vets they know best, I personally do not give biscuits to my cat as I feel it's like flossing with a digestive biscuit, & think they lead to kidney probs. hope Toby feels better soon,
good luck Baloo j.

Re: Teeth advice please

Just to give you a rough idea - two of my older fur children have had a dental this year. Both had to have one tooth extracted and the cost was £180 and £200 which included the painkilling injection and antibiotics (which you probably wouldn't need with just a clean!).

Mine aren't insured but the vet nurse did say that if they were, insurance will sometimes pay out depending on how the claim is worded - but again that probably wouldn't be the case with just a clean and polish.

I'm now trying to feed raw chicken drumsticks. Four of my eight enjoy them but the other four (three who are 'mature') are not remotely interested

Re: Teeth advice please

Can I buy logic gel online?

I will speak to the vet on Monday anyway and see if I can get an appointment and see what they think.
I would rather nip it in the bud now before it gets too bad.

Thanks xx
