Failure to absorb nutrition

My 6 year old cat is constantly hungry, is withdrawn, is drinking loads, his bowels are loose, and he is very thin.
He eats like a horse, I have now given in and am feeding him dried foods (banned as he got a stone the size of a lemon pip in his bladder and the other cat crystals) as well as cooked minced turkey, and the type tinned cat food that requires a second mortgage - even in his present state he won't eat bog standard.
He acts like an elderly cat with kidney disease, but his kidney function is fine, he doesn't have diabetes or thyroid problems. The vet think that he is not absorbing any nourishment from food - in it goes out it comes.
Anyone had any experience of this, is it treatable? The current set of tests have gone to the States, so the results will take sometime.

Don't know if I'm stating the obvious here but has he been wormed recently?

Re: Failure to absorb nutrition

Believe me, even his poo has been tested, and there is no sign of worms or other parasites.

Question Re: Failure to absorb nutrition

Would Nurish-Um paste help to give him some nourishment?

Re: Failure to absorb nutrition

I suppose IBD is a possibility but it needs a biopsy to diagnose

Has he been tetsted for tritrichomonas foetus, this does not show up on standard faecal testing, needs a special test. See TFFelines.com - Home

Some people find that Iams Hairball dried food can help in cases of diarrhoea where nothing else seems to work - it has to be fed exclusively (no other food offered) and will work within 2-3 days if it's going to.

Other people swear by a raw diet for treating this type of problem.

I can understand how frustrating it must be, as well as unpleasant for your cat and you. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Re: Failure to absorb nutrition

You could try adding Tree Barks powder to his meals Tree Barks powder-Dorwest Herbs Ltd thats supposed to help soothe the digestive tract and help with poor absorbtion. You can just sprinkle it on his food, but they also recommend that you mix some in live yogurt - goats milk is good as it is lower lactose than cows - with a little bit of honey. The live yogurt will help replace good gut flora and the honey helps soothe inflammed tissue. You could also try adding probiotics to his food or water.

Kozy
The Vet thinks that the filaments in his intestine may not be working, the blood test will not come back from the USA for another week. I don't think that the has been tested for TF - there was no urgency about getting the sample to the Vet, I will mention it to him. He is eating 250gms of turkey plus basmati rice plus dried food a day and still wants more, and is a furbag of bones. I feed the two cats apart. The other eats a tiny amount in comparison and is a typical Blue, built like a prop forward.
