Boiled chicken - good or not?

Hi,

A neighbour's cat seems to have adopted us lately and, with agreement from the neighbours, we are now feeding him almost every day.

He was used to a diet of only Go-Cat at their house but got the occassional treat of ham/chicken/tuna.

After a bit of trial and error his favourite appears to be boiled chicken but after reading lots on this forum it appears that its not necessarily a good thing. I have also bought some Hill's Neuetered Cat with Chicken dry food.

So, I wanted to ask the experts on here what they thought. He currently gets from us:

Breakfast: 30/40g boiled chicken (inc. some liquid from cooking the chicken) mixed with 10g of Hills

Out all day

Dinner: 60/70g boiled chicken (inc. some liquid from cooking the chicken) mixed with 10g of Hills

Overnight: bowl of Hills left out that he picks at, doesnt eat a great deal though

He also gets Cat Milk once/day

Is this enough food for a 4.5kg cat? and is it the right food?

Thanks

Re: Boiled chicken - good or not?

boiled chicken is not good as a long term diet it doesn't have all the right nutrients in in especially Taurine - a lack of which can cause severe heart problems. He doesn't need the cat milk - and hills is expensive and not the best quality dry or wet food.

If you can as he's a neutered boy I'd steer clear of dry completely and feed him a better quality wet and save the chicken as a treat - from the pets shops try natures diet, purely, or hi-life or from the web at Pet Supplies, Pet Food, Dog Food, Cat Food and Pet Accessories at Zooplus try smilla, bozita and aminonda carny. If you must feed dry go for a grain free one like acana.

Hope that helps.

Re: Boiled chicken - good or not?

As Spid says....you are spending a lot of money but unfortunately not actually providing a great diet for the cat.
Firstly you deserve praise for taking this little cat on, and also for caring so much that you come browsing on a forum like this one here, but your reading so far has already given you lots of information about what are considered to be better foods for cats.
If you shop in a supermarket you can get Applaws or Encore dry food which is grain free and better quality than the Hills. You may have to try a few different brands of wet cat food to find one which he likes, Butchers Classic is one of the cheaper 400g cans widely available but it also does not contain grain so is not a bad food. If he likes chicken then you could try the Feline Fayre black tins which do a shredded chicken and ham flavour which my lot love as a treat. ( Asda, blue tins are not complete ) Obviously if you are prepared to shop online then Zooplus offer a wide range of premium quality canned foods.
Cat milk is not necessary but can again be a nice treat, try to get Toplife as it doesnt contain all the sugar that Whiskas does.
Oh, and pictures are mandatory.

Re: Boiled chicken - good or not?

I have looked at zooplus and like the look of the Animonda Carny range, but am a bit concerned at the feeding requirement recommendations! for a 4kg cat it says he should have 460g/day. Surely not, he'll explode !

Going on what I give him now I would have said an 85g tin for breakfast and one for dinner with the odd treat in between. Am I being mean? He certainly isn't losing weight.

While I decide on the Zooplus stuff, I am going to order some Feline Fayre from ASDA as I have them coming tomorrow anyway, so that's a quick fix until I can put a zooplus order together.

So, now I know WHAT he should be eating, please can I have advice on quantities - he is approx 4.5kg and 5yr old

Thanks very much

oh and I will post a photo as soon as I have one

Re: Boiled chicken - good or not?

Not sure where you got 460g from, I am looking now and it says for a 4kg normal weight cat, 305g, which sounds about right to me. For a 5kg cat its 330g, putting the feeding recommendation for a 4.5kg cat at roughly 315g.

Re: Boiled chicken - good or not?

I think the fish ones are complementary so shouldnt be a large part of a cats diet anyway

Or at least I thought they were... can't find anything on there about them being comp. Those are much more expsnive than the normal carny anyway it seems.

Ah found it, the fish ones are supplementary but the ocean ones look like the might be complete...

Great Deals on Cat Food only at zooplus!
The 'adult fish menu' says supplementary innthe description so from that I would say no it's not complete.
