Re: Cat Flu

Your first action should be to go to your vet and get throat swabs taken.

Calici always shows up before the Herpes virus does so you need to make sure they do the extra test for the Herpes one....the vet will know what is needed. I think it costs about £54 but you will then know one way or the other what you are dealing with.

The tests should come back in about 4-5 days so you won't have long to wait and you can then start to make plans.

Thank you - i've been trawling a few threads and some got a bit heated - so wanted to avoid that. But am in a pickle re the young man and young lady
Some do, yes. But we know you only want to do the right thing. As Lou & Lou say, you really need to get tests done on him and keep her and the kittens away from him. I put my girls in their own room about 2 weeks before they are due, to make it quiet and safe just for them and their babies. That way I can keep a close eye on things before, during and after the birth. Like many on here, I have a flask & food during labour, lol.

Re: Cat Flu

, bet that is a weight off your mind I think alot unnecessarily is made of flu carriers, and its used by some as a stick to beat other breeders with. I went to a cat seminar once, where a guest speaker on flu said that to put it into perspective a high percentage of people are herpes carriers, and you could be sat next to one, but would you insist on them being segregated and kept on their own. He did make a lot of sense.

Still no more worries of that kind. When is your girl due?

Hopefully 4th Jan - we are just waiting for her to pink up (Sunday-ish we hope). She is such a lovely nature that i'm sure her kittens will take after her, and the stud was really sweet and friendly too. I'm trying not to get too excited especially after reading the horror stories that are on here (as well as the good stuff) - but the waiting is tortuous!

Re: Cat Flu

I agree - if you breed, you are going to encounter flu viruses - no doubt about it. Fact of life. You just have to be aware of how these viruses behave and work around it. Sometimes that does unfortunately mean that certain cats have to be rehomed, but that's just a less good part of being a long-term breeder.

I wouldn't worry, problems genuinely don't happen that often. It just that people post more about the issues than their lovely straight forward births. I will be sending lots of "pink vibes" your way The first three weeks seem really long until you know they are pregnant. The next 5 weeks or so fly passed and then that last week and a bit seems like a year.
