Re: Oral cancer or something else?

I think you need to have your cat assessed again before taking any drastic action. If you trust this vet, then get them or someone else in the practice to take another look today. Ask if there are any tests which can be carried out to confirm/rule out cancer and other likely causes. If they really can't be sure ask for some more anti-biotics for a few days and perhaps an appetite stimulent. If you have any doubts, see another vet.

I don't know much about oral cancer other than the fact my friend's cat had it. He wasn't eating very well at the end of July and oral cancer was diagnosed with two months to live. He lived a little over two months.

Re: Oral cancer or something else?

Thanks everyone for all your replies! I figured I'd give an update on the kitty. She appears to be improving. Yesterday was the first time she ate on her own, and she started to clean again. She still drools a bit from time to time. Our vet is still at a loss as to what it is. We assume she would not improve if it wasn't cancer, or at least that is what I'm hoping!

I'm glad to hear she's improving, sounds encouraging. I would however, seek a second opinion since your vet is unable to provide an accurate diagnosis.

Incidentally drooling can also be caused by tooth problems ( root abscesses etc ) which are not visible on examination. An X-ray is required.

I agree fully with the above it certainly seems likely to be some sort of abscess or infection in the mouth

abscesses can make them feel really really sickly nevermind the pain they cause. . . if you've ever had a bad infection it puts you off your food because you feel unwell in general. . . so the antibiotics might be helping it to heal. ..I would still get a second opinion though as above.

my cat once got scratched by another cat (we weren't aware until it turned into an abscess) we noticed a swelling on her face and wondered what was wrong, she wouldn't eat that day and we had already booked a vet's appointment because of the swelling.. .the vet said she wouldn't eat because it was on her cheek and so it was painful but the infection would make her feel really sick. . . and it was the vet that said it was from a cat scratch. . .they literally grabbed hold of her face and squeezed her cheek, the cat scratch opened back up and puss just poured out of her face. . . he cleaned her up and gave us some antibiotics to take home for it and she was fine once she'd finished the course!

so if she has an ulcer in her mouth she may also have an abscess. . either in her mouth or even elsewhere. ..because ulcers normally happen when your immune system is compromised or run down. . . so it might be that she has an abscess and that's made her feel really really unwell. . .I would find another vet who wants to get to the bottom of the problem

Re: Oral cancer or something else?

oh and might I add. . .when he was squeezing her face. . .it sounds really cruel and really painful but once he let go of her she acted differently straight away because she was acting a bit nasty even though she's normally a lovely cat but the pain was causing her to lash out a bit. . . once he'd squeezed out the puss and therefore released some of the pressure she went straight back to her normal self!
