Rubbing bottom on carpet!!

I wormed my mini cat last night (5 months old teeny lady) and this morning she two quite runny ghastly smelling poos and then proceeded to rub her bottom along the carpet like dogs do! I had to laugh I'm afraid but wondered why she would do this other than having an itchy bottom?!

Re: Rubbing bottom on carpet!!

Scooting the bum on the floor is a classic sign of worms ( they give an itchy anus! ) so I am presuming she is passing the dead worms, hence the runny poops. Out of interest, which wormer did you use?

Re: Rubbing bottom on carpet!!

First time she has done this, and we use Milbemax. Only get wormers from the vets. I've heard the horror stories about shop bought wormers!

I thought that could be the reason, passing dead worms. I've told my partner to keep an eye on her today as he is on nihgts and not at work until 4.30pm.

Re: Rubbing bottom on carpet!!

As you've just wormed her I would say it's not worms!, but sometimes just to get rid of poo stuck to their butt!!
Also can be a sign of impacted/infected anal glads, really bad breath is a good indicator of anal gland problems - it's not that common in cats, more so in dogs but does happen, if she keeps doing it maybe ask your vet to check her out!

Re: Rubbing bottom on carpet!!

My cat had tapeworms (saw them coming out of her bum) And kept dragging her ars around on the floor.

Check the wormer you used covers ALL worms. If it does not cover tapeworms and she is still doing it in 24-48 hours then i would suggest worming again with drontal which covers tape worm

I'm not a vet, nor do i claim to be a drug expert but i wouldn't give this sort of advice on a public forum!

I would NOT recommend giving Drontal without seeking veterinary advice first, dosing with Milbemax then Drontal so close together is probably an overdose and personally i just wouldn't risk it without veterinary advice.

Milbemax treats BOTH roundworm and tapeworm, as well as lungworm & heartworm so is a complete wormer.

Re: Rubbing bottom on carpet!!

My guess is that your cat is trying to empty her anal glands. When she rubs her butt on the carpet, is it leaving a nasty smell (something like a mix of smelly cheese, stinky feet and sour milk)?

Cats tend to empty their anal glands when they poo but generally the sacs cannot be effectively emptied unless they're passing hard poo so, instead, they rub their butts on the floor to empty them.
