How much does your kitten eat

Having been a reader, but not a poster, I have kitten eating envy. I am wowed by the tails of kittens eating 400g of food a day! My little moggy female is approaching 5 months and weighs a respectable 2kgs but she will only eat 200g a day (admittedly of grau, smilla, ac etc). Is this ok? She never has an empty bowl. Is it just that certain breeds have a bigger appetite or has my kitten been reading too many copies of grazia?

Re: How much does your kitten eat

Seems fine to me. Mine eats about 225g of raw but it is dropping off at the moment - she's 5 months now and weigh about 2.5kg.

Re: How much does your kitten eat

She also seems to do a lot of her eating during the night - when her food bowl is in my bedroom. Not sure if this is normal or not! She is very good and knows that my bed time is quiet time so she is normally asleep on the bed when I go go sleep - but I wake up to a magically empty food bowl!

Re: How much does your kitten eat

my 6 month kitten regulary packs away 300-375g a day, he weighs a hansome 3.2kg at 6 months! Not sure of his parentage so who knows how big he'll get, he's not fat very long & lean but never sits still i very rarely catch him sleeping! As long as shes healthy & gaining weight feed her as much/little as she wants. You're feeding good quality so it probably keeps her full. Also mine seem to eat a lot at night, so much so they have to be fed at 4am or i won't be allowed to sleep

Re: How much does your kitten eat

Some kittens just don't eat as much as others. I think as long as your kitten is free-fed and in good health, then there really isn't any need to be concerned.

My kittens both eat quite a bit but they seem to be on the big side too; my smaller kitten was 1.9kg when she was 15 weeks and the other was 2.48kg.

Re: How much does your kitten eat

Thanks polka dotty - no rules with moggies I guess. Are there specific guidelines with certain pedigrees or are kittens just kittens and anything goes? I am enjoying the journey of discovery!

Re: How much does your kitten eat

I tihnk the consensus is that kittens should be fed however much they will eat, regardless of breed. I imagine that some of the bigger breeds of cats (e.g. Maine Coons, Norwegian Forest Cat) will tend to eat more but I don't think that it's always the cae. I think it depends on the size/build of each individual cat.
