Earliest neutering?

I posted before about my kitten Oscar's sister who is in desperate need of rehoming (baby with breathing problems is allergic and has been admitted to hospital). I am thinking of taking her but I don't have long to decide now as the baby is coming home soon and they are desperate (they will be advertising her as free to good home if I don't have her which worries me a lot - about any animal but especially one I know).

I'm just worried as she is a girl. Oscar and she will be five months old next Friday - I have phoned the vets but couldn't speak to an actual vet and was told earliest neutering for boys is five and a half months. When I told them what I'm planning they said he could be done next week but I should keep them apart until then.

Is this right? I don't want to keep them apart as I'm trying to get them re-introduced whilst both are still at the kitten-ish stage (and also I have an older outdoor cat who will need to take it slow with introduction - I can't keep all three of them apart when I'm ot here!).

Could Oscar be neutered before 5 months (ie Monday or Tuesday if they can get him in), it will only be a few days before?

I'm really dithering! Not worried about finances or anything else really - just about ending up with a baby having babies. Help, I don't want to dither too long and find the poor girl's gone to goodness knows who

Re: Earliest neutering?

They neuter over here as early as 7 weeks. The rule is 2 months or 2lbs, whichever comes first. Males neutered younger than 6 months tend never to develop secondary sex characteristics. I can't remember them all, but I think there's basically 3 things, and one is a wider head/face, and one is a more muscular heavy body. So, you might end up with a more delicate looking male. But he should be fine and dandy. It's not dangerous if that's your worry

And it's so nice of you to take his sister. How lovely!!

Re: Earliest neutering?

He can be neuterd now, Scutter & Casper (moggie's) were alot younger than that when they were done, however if you have an un-spayed female I would get her spayed to as he will still be able to do the deed for a few weeks after being neuterd, hope everything works out

Re: Earliest neutering?

Thanks for that, I did think I'd read that they could be done much younger than the person at the vets was telling me. TBH Oscar is quite big already, I was looking at him next to Harry last night and he's gone from being about a quarter of Harry's size to about three quarters to look at him!

Now I just have to convince the vet receptionist to book him in ASAP. Do you think it's safe to have them together before it's done - if I'm with them all day and keep them in a separate room at night?

Well she's gorgeous so it's no hardship really! She's a grey tabby who is is soppy as Oscar (apparently she loves being carried round a like a baby just like Oz does). I've got some pictures of her and Oscar with mum and their other sibling when they were about 7 weeks old. I'm really excited but trying to be sensible just in case we can't have her, sounds like it could all be ok though

Eek! Now I asked about that and the person at the vets (? receptionist ? vet nurse, I should have asked) said it would be better to wait with the girl and get Oscar done first. I don't have any reason why both can't be done if the vets will ok it, sounds like I need a chat with an actual vet at my practice.

I'm off this weekend and Monday/Tues/Weds and was thinking it would be nice all round if we could get her tomorrow - is it really that dodgy having two 21 week olds who aren't neutered together? Oscar still seems like a baby to me, I know that can be deceptive

Re: Earliest neutering?

I think DB's Tango was done at 4 months (correct me if wrong, DB?), and he has a fantastic MC face so I'm not so convinced about the whole getting a broader face thing!
