Best food for building up underweight cat.?

I took Jess to the vets today, she had a dental in june but she has lost more weight since then. She had a thorough examination today and a small lump was found in the abdomen area (vet wasnt specific) after finding it she lost it again!. Jess has had blood taken and its being tested for the usual things, as well as leukemia, a hard lump of poo was also suggested. She has soft poo -not diarrhoea with the occassional bit of bloody mucus. No vomiting and no excessive drinking. The results are due back monday or tuesday so fingers crossed its not too serious. Sorry I'm rambling here, what I need advice on is foods to build her up. Jess is quite a fussy eater, she likes felix in jelly, cheap chicken roll and tuna and a recent discovery- raw lamb she also drinks cat milk. Any suggestions as to what will stimulate her appetite and improve input would be greatfully recieved. Thanks.

Re: Best food for building up underweight cat.?

Firstly, how old is Jess? How long has she had the soft stools for? I'm glad to hear she's had a blood test and I hope this will help to pinpoint a reason for the weight loss. Actually I'm also wondering about inflammatory bowel disease which could cause all the symptoms you describe including weight loss and inappetence ( often due to nausea and medication can help with this ) in which case she would probably need to be a prescription diet/medication so I would speak to the vet about this.

Otherwise I would switch her to a good quality wet food in the flavours she likes. I found mine really like Bozita, Grau and Animonda!

Good luck with blood results.

Thanks for the reply, Jess is 12 yrs, the stools have been soft for about 3 weeks. Jess adores cows milk, she will steal it if at all possible and it has never affected her stools. When they first became soft I presumed it was the milk so I stopped the milk but the stools remained soft.

Have you tried a brand called Lilly's Kitchen (organic food)? One of my cats has diabetes (he was loosing weight and looked very tired and was always hungry). The Vet recommened Hill Prescription diet but I asked her what the difference was between that and Lilly's and she said diabetics must have a low-carbohydrate diet - and then later said that I can mix the 2 brands.
Have you tried grilled chicken (organic is best for you and cats - a treat once a week). I hope your cat gets well soon - my cat has bounced back however, I have to give him Insulin injections and has to be monitored at the vets regularly.
