Friend's fleas!

One of my best mates lives round the corner so we spend lots of time together. She has two cats too and has had a really bad flea problem. Naturally I don't want fleas in my house and getting onto my cats.
Could the fleas get on her and come into my house, and vice versa if I go round there would I end up carrying fleas back to my house?

Re: Friend's fleas!

You could yes. You can pick up fleas from the environment including the garden so its always a good idea to spray the house from time to time with a recommended insecicide (from the vet).

Re: Friend's fleas!

Hi,
you could try a flea killer from Amazon Flea Killer: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

or other websites. If the trap catches even one flea you know you have a flea problem and you should spray your house. I bought it this summer and it worked

Re: Friend's fleas!

My Mum and I both have indoor cats and she managed to get a bad flea problem because my brother works outdoors and was bringing them in.

I use Advocate and havn't had a problem with them as they treat the environment as well.

Yes. My sister had a flea infestation in the summer and she doesn't own any pets but after being around her friends house a few roads away she started to notice fleas in her house. She had a hard time getting rid of them untill I mentioned about getting a household flea spray from the vets and then they disappeared after about 5 days.

Re: Friend's fleas!

Once fleas afre in your house it's hard to eradicate them as others have said. Couldn't you encourage your friend to Advocate - she can't enjoy being a fleas dinner? I used to periodically have a flea issue (mainly in the summer) since using Advocate my son and I haven't had a single bite and the cats are look so happy! It's expensive but well worth it and I think you can reduce the frequency of applications in the winter.

Re: Friend's fleas!

Thanks all. She has been treating her cats and house but hasn't been able to get rid of them yet. I'll make sure she stays away from our house and I'm not going round to hers! Feel bad but fleas just aren't worth it!

If she's using Frontline, then she's probably on a hiding to nothing as I was treating with this 2 years ago yet still being eaten alive. No amount of spraying helped.... I really was losing the plot.....

Thanks to this forum, I went onto Advocate - Ok, I put the CATS onto Advocate - back in April of this year and haven't had a flea bite since!!! The stuff is AMAZING. It treats both the cat and the area it frequents within the house. I have not had to spray the house as the Advocate did it all for me.

It also treats ear mites and MOST types of worms. It is a spot-on and available from the vet.

I really would be recommending this to your friend.

Re: Friend's fleas!

My cats have flea injections from the vet every six months. The Burmese love going down the bed covers and snuggling up and there's no way I could let them do that if there was any chance of fleas. I used to use the spot on the back of the neck stuff, but it was a pain because I had to keep them all separated for hours until it dried, otherwise they'd just lick it straight off each other - they'd yowl the place down all shut up in separate rooms.

Now they're injected once with their annual boosters when they'd be going anyway, so it only involves one extra vet visit per year.
