renal food for Tigger

Hi
My cat's vet recently did a screen for older cats before doing some dental treatment. He said that Tigger had some renal problems, and proposed to treat it by dietary means. I have bought Royal Canin Renal wet and dry food for her, but she doesn't seem keen on it. The vet said it's quite common in older cats and it's not a chronic condition. Does anyone have any thoughts on the subject? If I mixed it with other food surely it would be better than her not eating?
What do you think?

Hey Tigger 52,

Sorry, I have no idea about this except I would say give mixing the foods a go, it wouldn't hurt and as you said at least he'd be having some. Good luck

Re: renal food for Tigger

Renal foods do slow down the progression of the disease but unfortunately not all cats like them! However, there are other ones available. Here's a link to Tanya's CRF site which lists others. Scroll down the page.

Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Renal Failure - Tinned Cat Food Data UK

In fact the whole site is an excellent resource for anyone with a CRF cat!

My old cat was diagnosed with renal failure when she was 15,she was put on the RC renal food and would just lick the juice off and then walk off.
Atfer a chat me and the wife decided eating something bad was better than nothing at all so we mixed a piece of shredded cooked chicken in with the RC and nuked the food for 10 secs in the micro.
The difference was amazing and she cleared the plate.Sadly we had to have her put to sleep a few months back but that was 2/5 yrs after diagnosis
Hope this of some help to you.
The secret is shred the chicken really fine so the cat thinks the meal is all chicken lol also warming helps the juices flow and make it all gravy'ish

Re: renal food for Tigger

Thanks for your replies, will try mixing thr RC food to start off with. Chicken for tea tonight so will try the shredded chicken tip! Tanya's website is very informative, lots to read!
Tigger's not the fattest of cats to start off with, so don't want her to eat less!
