Mushy Pad Syndrome or Pododermatitis

Anyone had a cat with the above? I know it is very rare and vets have no idea what causes it other than some auto immune malfunction, my vets had never even heard of it, but I have 2 cats with this problem!!
Both cats are from extremely inbred farm cats, probably for at least a decade with the same tom getting his daughters and grand daughters etc - my neighbors couldn't be bothered to get their cats neutered, so I ended up picking up the pieces when no-one wanted the kittens, I took all 5!

I have 3 left (one got run over, the other had renal failure after a cold, and the one the neighbors kept from the previous(same parents) litter died of a huge oral tumor at the age of 4 so really suffering from inbreeding!), one of mine left, Kipper, is healthy - pees on everything though!, the other 2 have this weird problem with their feet which we only noticed a few months ago when they started walking weirdly, they are 6yrs old and not the healthiest of cats anyway - their pads look like big marshmallows and look pretty tender to walk on - they do avoid jumping off anything high up.

Anyway I googled it and the general treatment seems to be long term steroids, so I had a chat with the vets and he gave me 3 months worth and it seems to be helping - their pads are looking a more normal colour and are returning to a slightly more normal shape - I just wondered if anyone else had had this, if so how did they treat it?, and long term did it return?, or did they need surgery?

Never heard of it - but it sounds nasty - just goes to show what inbreeding can do! Hope they get better soon.
