Is it possible for them to drink too much?

Icco drinks like a fish. He's on a combined wet/dry diet (probably around 65-70% wet), drinks beautifully from his bowl, slurps up our bath water every morning (not all of it!), and so on. I don't think he drinks excessively but he certainly has no problems keeping himself topped up.

I was considering buying him a drinking fountain, possibly for Giftmas or suchlike. He seems to love running water so much and as he's an indoor boy I thought a little extra stimulation for him would be appreciated.

I am a little worried though - he seems to get plenty of fluid anyway, and this might encourage him to drink still more. Would that necessarily be a bad thing? Is it possible to throw his electrolyte balance out of whack or would it take a lot more than that?

I have noticed that my Oscar (kitten) drinks far more than I've ever seen my older cat, Harry, drink - he's also on a combined diet as I can't get him off the dry he was weaned on. I'm no expert but I've definitely noticed it too.

Re: Is it possible for them to drink too much?

Have you got your heating on? I find my girls drink more when I put the storage heaters on. But generally they have no problem having a good slurp regularly through the day

If you do get a water fountain have a look at the CatMate ones, they are the best IMO They don't look pretty but boy do they make up for it in usability!

If you worry about it, maybe have a word with your vet. In older cats that suddenly start drinking more it's something to be more concerned about, but it wouldn't hurt to mention it next time you go with younger cats.

Re: Is it possible for them to drink too much?

My two don't drink much so I got them a CatMate fountain to try and encourage them. They haven't even looked at it and have now started drinking out the dog bowl

I ended up turning it off last night as wasting electricity for no reason.
