Help with my bengal

Ive had my bengal for 6 weeks, hes now 18 weeks old, but since the very day we have had him home he has had diarrhoea regardless of what we do, what we feed, what medication we give him. Hes had antibiotics, probiotics, worming tablets, kaogel, iams, royal canin. Nothing, absolutely nothing is settling it down. He gets caught short and poos wherever he is. His breeder says he was fine before he left her. He is not growing well although has put on some weight. He is aggressive and nothing like our other bengal was when she was a kitten. Any suggestions?

Re: Help with my bengal

Six weeks is an awfully long time to have diarrhea. I would take him back to the vets and have a stool test if not already done. I would suspect one or more parasitic infections. Which antibiotics has he had?

Re: Help with my bengal

Disappointed your breeder is not being more supportive. Agree with Ianthi - could potentially be something like Giardia or TF - both treatable but can take a while to get right. However it may be something like a food allergy but I would take him to the vets as soon as you can and ask them to start investigating/testing as why this is happening. If he is feeling under the weather it may be why he is more aggressive - heprobably feels quite miserable.

Re: Help with my bengal

A breeder let you have him at 6 weeks?

Has he been to the vets? The diarrhoea might be that you have let him have too much different food products (because you were trying to help him) in a short period of time. Have you tried him on plain boiled chicken or fish for a couple of days (no longer than that because its not a complete diet).

If you haven't taken him to the vet I think he needs to go.

Re: Help with my bengal

So sorry to hear this.

What are you feeding him? This could be really important.

Re: Help with my bengal

I'm sorry to hear your kitten is not well. Whilst I have never owned a Bengal I do know of someone who had one for a short time who experienced exactly the same problem. It turned out that the cat had got hip displaysia and his hip was pressing on his bowel, making him go to the toilet with urgency. An OP fixed this problem. I know that this can be a common complaint in Bengals and may be worth investigating.

Good luck.

Re: Help with my bengal

I have two 20 week old Bengal kittens, one brown spotted and one blue eyed snow. They have both had diarrhoea on occasion since I have had them, though they do usually manage to reach the litter box. They are both growing well and have shown no signs of aggression to us nor our other three moggies.

Diarrhoea is a very common problem with Bengals, they have very sensitive stomachs. Changing food can easily set them off. As others have said, I would try him on plain boiled chicken for a couple of days and then go on to Royal Canin Sensitive, and keep him on that until the problem settles.

And of course, continue to consult your vet as TF is an ailment that Bengals can also be prone to, but it is quite often not tested for by vets (need to undertake special tests on a stool sample).

Re: Help with my bengal

If you have ruled out other causes and it seems it is down to diet, you could take the plunge into raw food.

I know of several owners of Bengal kittens who never had a solid stool until they switched to raw (erm, I mean the kittens, not the owners). Some cats are more sensitive than others to the ingredients in commercial pet foods, including the specially-formulated brands such as Royal Canin Sensitive.
