Help please need advice on my male cat and kitten

Hello ive posted on the dog chat but first time on cat chat

Bit of advice please (hope its in the right section)

I have 2 female kittens 12 weeks old which i have had for 4 weeks now, one of the kittens has for the last week been following my male about (neutured) and every time he lies down or sits she sucks him, on his neck legs belly everywhere, and really sucks as you can hear it over the room, is this normal ?

And also im very worried my male cat who is 5 had what i thought a fur ball 4 weeks ago, i got the stuff they eat from the pet shop and made no difference so phoned vets and he said sounds like a blade of grass stuck and not to worry, so 2 weeks ago actually took him to vets and was told same thing. I really am a bit worried he dosent try to be sick, but is now spending more time indoors which is unusal and even tho he does meow purr etc it is like you have turnt the volume right down if you get what i mean.

Thankyou very much x

Re: Help please need advice on my male cat and kitten

your female is suckling on your male - this is probably because she was taken from mum at 8 weeks ( a little early - I know that most moggy 'breeders' do get rid at that age) and so the kittens have missed out on the last 4 weeks of important socialisation. She may stop of her own accord or may always want to suckle on somethings.

As for you male - if you aren't happy with what the vet has said take him back. Is he just retching? Or coughing? If he has a blade of grass stuck it needs to come out really and the vet needs to get it out if he can't.

Re: Help please need advice on my male cat and kitten

The suckling is pretty normal for kittens taken away that little bit early, my cat still does it (6.5 months) I've had her since 9 weeks, except she does it to my clothes! I'm surprised your neutered male lets them though!

Can't really advise much about the grass as my cats are indoor cats. Do you think he is quiet and staying in a lot because of that? Or do you think it's because of the kittens? noticed you said you have had them for 4 weeks and he has been quiet for 4 weeks as well.

If you're concerned it is that then I'd say take him back to the vets, again, or maybe get a second opinion if you don't find them being helpful.

Re: Help please need advice on my male cat and kitten

Oh i thought they could leave at 8 weeks, ok makes sense she also kneads me all the time and tries to do it to me. I know i should know this but when can female cats have kittens ? am i best to keep them indoors untill they have been done ? thats what i did with my male but they are desperate to go out and you have to be very carefull when you open doors

The vet told me he will pass the grass himself, i did phone today and could tell the vet was a bit anoyed about me asking again but it is really worrying any noise he makes is so low and just not like him, and no dosent retch or anything ?

Thankyou for the reply very appreciated

Don't worry, most people think its 8 weeks (me included) until joining here, As all moggy breeders seem to let them go at 8

They can get pregnant from as young as 4 months i think!! So best to keep them in until they're neutered!

Your vet doesn't sound very helpful so might be worth getting that second opinion if you're worried.

Re: Help please need advice on my male cat and kitten

Ohhh thats a nightmare my vet told me he wont spay till 6 months so ill keep them in, im not taking no chances, as lovely as they are i really have no interest in having 2 litters of kittens lol.

I will phone a different vets tomorrow and get him there, im really not convinced its a blade of grass, at first he was retching and coughing now he is just on mute or the odd noise he does make is so low and sort of husky.

Thankyou all very much

Re: Help please need advice on my male cat and kitten

I wouldn't be letting a kitten out at that age anyway...you are recommended to keep them in until about a year old as they are not physically or mentally mature enough to be outside so young.

Re: Help please need advice on my male cat and kitten

Awww bless him! Well i hope the new vets are more helpful!

It does sound a bit too young to let them out tbh. But having lost an older cat years ago that never returned is what makes me weary ...hence why my kitties are indoor kitties ...Plus they're far from streetwise and aren't the slightest bit bothered about going out, thankfully

If they're keen to go out you could buy or build a run for them in the garden so they can't wonder off
