Am I feeding them right?
Hi all,
I am just wondering If I am feeding my cats the right way. I only feed wet food which is Felix Kitten, and sometimes "Felix As good As It Looks" Max is 13 weeks and weighs 1.4KG Tibble (he was called Tigger but he likes Tibble better) is 8 weeks and weighs 900g I do leave out a little Nutricat (Dry) but my boys turn their nose up at dry which is OK by me. My feeding regime for them is: breakfast at 7:30am Lunch at 1PM Dinner 5PM Late Night feed 11pm or 12 AM if they are asleep They get a 100G pouch split between them per meal, so they are eating about 200g a day of food. I'm not sure if this is enough but they seem to graze on it depending on what it is. If its Salmon then they lick their bowls clean and I put out some more food for them, but not half becuase It will dry up and then they sniff it and walk away. They also get treats as well. They get a bowl of Whiskas Kitten milk each week, as the vet said it should really only be a weekly treat. If we are eating Plain meat or if we can cook some separately without added spices, they get some of that as well such as steak, or chicken, turkey etc. Am I giving them enough or too much? Am I leaving too much time between feeds. In Case your wondering my wife comes home at lunch time to feed them during the week. Thanks for any advice Jason |

Re: Am I feeding them right?
Quite a few questions there
![]() Regarding feeding times, it would be better if you could feed them more often, but it often isn't realistic for a lot of us. Mine were fed 4 times a day when they were kittens, although some people here have lives that enable them to feed 5 or 6 times a day. Quantity wise, kittens should have as much as they will eat. They're growing fast and need a lot more food than fully grown cats. Kittens can easily eat 400g of quality food a day. Which brings me onto Felix. You'll probably soon find out if you spend much time here that the vast majority of brands that can be bought in the supermarkets are poor quality. The meat content is typically quite low, with lots of fillers such as cereals, jelly and gravy. Cats have to eat a lot of them to get all the nutrients they need, and at the same time they're getting other things that their digestive systems aren't set up to handle. I'd take a look at Pet Supplies, Pet Food, Dog Food, Cat Food and Pet Accessories at Zooplus. A lot of people order from there, and they have a good range of much higher quality food. Popular ones are Animonda Carny, Bozita, Grau and Smilla. These foods generally work out cheaper overall because they have a high meat content and cats need to eat less of them. Plus, because they're high quality, you can feed adult food to kittens, and don't need to pay a premium for kitten food (although some of the brands I listed do make a kitten food, it isn't necessary). Dry food wise, if your kittens aren't interested, I wouldn't offer it to them. Wet food is far better for them. If you do want to give them some dry, the best choices are Acana and Orijen (again available from Zooplus) because these are grain free and have a high meat content. If you're going to give them meat, it's better to give it raw because that more closely mimics a cat's natural diet. Some people give their cats a raw chicken wing once or twice a week that they have fun pulling apart, and it also helps to keep their teeth clean. Any changes to their diet should be made gradually. Start by mixing in a small amount of new food with their current food, and gradually increase it over the next few days until they're totally on the new food.

Re: Am I feeding them right?
OK thanks everybody for answering my questions. Sorry about the amount of them.
I feel awful now, I don't hold back their food for any reason, I just based it on what they are eating and what they left in the bowl, and I did not want them to have dried up food in their bowl. I will start giving them more from now on. Ill look at the better foods too. Many Thanks Jason |

Payment made...
Max is the black one and Tibble is the other.. They are not from the same litter or even related, but they are the best of friends ![]() Last edited by Azic; 26-09-2011 at 01:55 PM.. |

Re: Am I feeding them right?
They're gorgeous. It's so sweet the way they sleep all over each other. Sam and Milly never did that, even when they were kittens (they're also not related).
