Feeding advice needed please

I've not had my kitten long but having read these forums I realise that Whiskas etc is not good quality food. So I bought some Applaws through Zooplus but now realise I can't give Jessie only high quality wet food as it is too expensive.
So which option would you think is better?

a) 1 can applaws, 1 pouch whiskas, unlimited complete good quality dry food

b) 1 can applaws, unlimited complete good quality dry food

c) 2 cans medium quality wet food ~40-50% meat, unlimited complete good quality dry food.

Thanks

Re: Feeding advice needed please

Well, I dont find high quality any more expensive than poor food.

I think you have gone the wrong way with Applaws. it is expensive, and its not complete, so yeah, I can see why you think it is expensive, but its not one of the 'high quality' wets...

Something like animonda, bozita, or smilla isnt expensive.

Anything where dry is the staple is not good for cats.

Re: Feeding advice needed please

Hi there

Unless your cat is a fussy monster like my girl is, I'd steer clear of Applaws as it's not complete. It's Ok for a treat, but it's a pretty expensive treat!

Animonda and Bozita are super, but beware if ordering with Zooplus as I've had swolen cans in my last two orders. Smilla is super though, and none of the tins were damaged so far. Fingers crossed it continues! It's reasonably cheap.

I have to say that I still feed my cats dry, but it's a 50/50 mix of wet and dry, and it works just fine for me.

Re: Feeding advice needed please

I'm still looking for scientific research that backs up that dry food is not good for cats, if anyone can post a link to the papers I'd really appreciate it.

I didn't realise Applaws wasn't a good option - it's at least 70% meat so I thought it would be good. I will have a look at the others mentioned. As you can tell I'm still very new to this!

Thanks

Re: Feeding advice needed please

Its not good because it doesnt contain all the nutrients needed for cats, so, as a treat its great, but lacking if fed to a cat for a main part of its diet.

If you are unconvinced about dry causing UTI's etc, look at the ingredients, and how it looks, and how can that be considered a natural diet for a cat? Cats do not seek out grains, nor eat dry biscuits, and are not natural drinkers

This article has some interesting points http://www.homevet.com/petcare/feedingyourcat.html

Re: Feeding advice needed please

Right, now I've found the Animonda larger tins which obviously are a lot cheaper! Forget the Whiskas, I'll probably do 50% wet and 50% dry.

Re: Feeding advice needed please

If you are going to feed dry (@50% of diet) try to go for a grain free one - like Acana or Orijen - it's more expensive but they eat less of it.

I agree, the amount Benji would eat in one sitting of Royal Canin compared to what he will eat of Acana/Orijen mix is quite big in difference. He eats much less as it's a higher meat content so fills them up quicker

Re: Feeding advice needed please

I agree with GM. Feeding a high quality wet is actually cheaper as they eat less because it isn't full of jelly etc. With the likes of Felix pouches they recommed 3-4 a day per cat which means one box of 12 at about £5 a box will only last 3 or 4 days. If you buy high quality in bulk it is cheaper. I've spent about £30 on food from Zooplus in the last 3 weeks (Smilla, Bozita and Animonda Carny) and still have over half left. If I had been feeding Felix I would have spent at least twice that.

I haven't been following the guidelines for feeding though as kittens should be given an unlimited supply of wet - to a certain extent. My two can easily put away 400g each a day - probably a lot more if I let them, especially the Bozita pates.

Re: Feeding advice needed please

Thanks for all the advice. I'll get a grain-free dry food.
