Baby Teeth Question/Concern

Hello,

Bella has been teething and her adult teeth are coming through.

I just noticed then when she yawned that her upper canines are through.. However they are sitting side by side with her baby teeth :-/.. So she has like 4 upper canines at the moment.

Does a vet need to remove them or do I leave her alone with them...?

Re: Baby Teeth Question/Concern

It's OK. I think I know what to do. Panic is over .

We all had a look at her teeth tonight and decided that if they haven't fell out on their own by Monday then we will take her the vet and go from there.

Bella's been asleep more than usual today. I have a feeling they sprouted through during her sleep time! I think I would have noticed something this unusual sooner so that's why they strike me as literally a new addition during her sleep today!

Poor little thing though. I really hope this isn't ANOTHER thing they need to do when she gets spayed in a couple of weeks time .

EDIT: I gently felt her little baby teeth too and they are not loose or wobbly .

Re: Baby Teeth Question/Concern

I think this is normal.....when Monty had his second jab recently ( he is around 6 months ) the vet pointed out that he had a double row of teeth. I was told to keep an eye just to make sure that the gums were not getting sore and that the baby teeth would soon be pushed out by the adult ones.
I wouldn't make a separate trip to vets, maybe call for advice and get it checked at your next scheduled check up if neutering is soon.

That's absolutely normal. They come side by side and for a while they have those double sets of canine teeth.

Re: Baby Teeth Question/Concern

Thank you!!

Is there anything I should watch out for? Is there a time scale I should watch for?

I'm more or less going by myself .. I had to have my baby teeth removed because my new teeth didn't push them out .. They were worried because they would cause overcrowding.

Re: Baby Teeth Question/Concern

The vet said that the upper canines are the last to exfoliate at a very precise age of 5.5 months (as I didn't know for sure the age of my cat, I used this info to estimate the birthday). If you know the age of your cat, I would keep an eye to see if everything is ok around the 5.5 milestone. I doubt that your cat will have dental crowding. The only animals I've ever heard of having this kind of problems are a couple of pure breed dog whose genetics have been manipulated a lot.

Re: Baby Teeth Question/Concern

Don't worry. My MC Larry had double canines for a while, around the 5-month mark. I had never come across it before and was very surprised! But the baby teeth fell out OK and it didn't cause any problems. It did look freaky though!
