Has anyone else given up....

....trying to totally wean their cat/s off dry food?

OK I haven't totally given up (yet) but I'm finding it really difficult to wean Oscar off his dry completely. On a positive note he is off the Go-Kat he was weaned onto and eating good quality wet food (Hi Life, Purely, Applaws and Nature's Harvest) and small amounts of cereal free dry (Applaws, hopefully Orijen next week).

He looks all shiny and fantastic and is growing madly (he's 4 and half months old now) AND he has no more diarrhoea so I must be doing something right BUT I worry he's not eating enough wet - because he loves the dry so much he's filling up on that. I've tried (several times) not giving him any dry at all during the day .....and he eats less wet! By evening he looks desperate for the dry food that I cave in. On a normal "combined" day he's eating between 160g and 200g of wet (usually closer to 160g) plus a large handful of dry a couple of times a day. If I withhold the dry totally he eats much less - today he'd eaten only about 60g of wet all day until I caved in and gave him some dry tonight.

Is he eating enough? Is a combined diet really so much worse than an entirely wet diet?

Re: Has anyone else given up....

To be honest, I don't really mind if mine have ad-lib dry available. They only eat a tiny bit of it in the morning anyway, and most of what they eat is wet (Animonda, Smilla, Grau).

Just gives them a bit of variety IMO, and Hobbes likes to crunch things ocassionally. If they were on raw they would be crunching bones etc, with just a wet food diet it must be a tad boring texture-wise.

Having said that, I don't think it would be too hard to move either of mine onto a 100% wet-food diet.

I agree with Spid. Steel yourself, ditch the dry, and he'll soon forget about it. See if you can engage his instincts, his interest and help keep his teeth clean by introducing a chicken wing tip every now and then.

Sorry Chewie don't want to steal your thread but just want to ask - is it bad for your cat to eat dry food then? Jaffe is on a mixture of Royal Canin for kittens and Felix sensations.

Yes .

Some people still feed dry though and swear by it. I don't think it's necessarily "bad" its just not the "best" even when you can give your cat the best brand available.

I find it caused horrendous problems with my previous cat's water works.

Re: Has anyone else given up....

Royal Canin made it very easy for me by changing their recipe which proceeded to give Oscar the dire-rear so he welcomed the change of food.

I used to soak the dry kibbles in hot water before feeding so I think this helped the transformation over to wet. I still have to add extra water now to the wet food as they prefer it very moist.

How often do you feed them? You could try doing wet for breakfast and supper and maybe some dry in the middle for tea......

Re: Has anyone else given up....

I just spotted that sticky after I asked the question doh! When doing all my research before I got Jaffe I always read that dry was better than wet. I wish I had joined this forum now before I got him. I mainly gave hime what the breeder did although changed from whiskas to felix as he seemed to not be as fond of whiskas. I mixed them together then only gave him dry food at night. I think once I finish the Royal Canin I will move Jaffe on to some better quaility wet stuff which I don't think he will mind at all. Thank guys!
