Cats with CRF - Confused!

Hi Everybody

My Cat has CRf There seem's to be a little bit of confusion amongst Vet's as to weather Cat's with CRF should have protein in their diet, I'm confused too as there are conflicting opions on this!! some say it's OK others say no way!

Would be very intersted to hear from anyone out there on this very confusing subject!

Thanks

Re: Cats with CRF - Confused!

I should really leave this to more scientifically minded experts....but my understanding is that the out dated thinking of using low protein has been replaced with the suggestion that it is the quality of the protein that is important. That is, to restrict phosphorous rather than meat protein itself. The quality of meat is important as meat meal and connective tissues contain higher levels of phos--and lower levels of nutrition-- than human grade whole meats.

Have you been to Tanya's site?
Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Renal Failure
What that site doesnt tell you about CRF is probably not worth knowing!

Re: Cats with CRF - Confused!

I have a CRF cat and he's on a special kidney diet which is low in phosphorus. I'm afraid you will end up even more confused by the time everyone has finished posting on this thread. There will be advocates for the special kidney diets and advocates for raw diets. Tanya's CRF site is a good place to get information about this and there are CRF groups that you can join and ask about other people's experiences. Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Renal Failure

To quote what was said on one of my CRF groups:

"A point of clarification: if you are feeding raw to your CRF kitty, mentioning it in your posts is perfectly fine; providing directions or advocating that others feed raw isn't OK onlist or off.

.... Members rely on the information presented, so your postings can affect the health of other members' cats - either positively or negatively.

We ask that everyone take care to provide accurate, verified information from legitimate sources. The best postings often include references that point the reader to more in-depth material. If you are unsure of the answer to a member's question, consider waiting to see if someone with better or more complete information responds. If you do post something you aren't certain of, note that fact in your email and recommend that readers not act on the information unless it is confirmed.

We also ask that members not lose their critical thinking skills. Just because you read something on the Internet doesn't make it true. Check out the credentials of those making the claims on the Internet or elsewhere -- what's the basis for their claimed expertise? Do they have specialized education and training, or are they merely advocating their personal opinions? Beware of falling victim to the cult of personality. Realize that many/most Internet sites making virtually miracle "claims," particularly those "selling" products or ideas absent legitimate substantiation of those claims, may have an agenda (hidden or otherwise)that's not the best interest of your cat. Such sites often rely on "testimonials" that may or may not be legitimate and may or may not be appropriate for your specific situation. An excellent example is sites that sing the praises of products containing diuretics for cats with "kidney" problems, when the facts are that such products absolutely are NOT appropriate for the vast majority of CRF kitties and that CRF kitties needing diuretics need to be under the close supervision of a qualified veterinarian, not looking for magic bullet cures from commercial Web sites.

.....Remember that the member's vet may well have more information regarding the cat's condition than you do and that the best advice to offer is generally, "I suggest you talk to your vet about. . ."

.....Finally, as a reader, you need to realize the experience level of members varies widely, and that you should verify all information posted before acting upon it. The final responsibility for your cat's treatment is yours. ALWAYS talk with your vet before starting, stopping, or changing any treatment, and that includes diet changes."

Some real pearls of wisdom in here so please bear it in mind when you get responses.
