Allergic to chicken?

I know people recommend boiled chicken for cats with an upset tummy, so presumably it's a meat that cats generally tolerate very well. So, has anyone ever come across a cat who's allergic to chicken?

Milly has had random bouts of sickness for most of her life, and every vet we've taken her to has said there's nothing wrong with her, and the reason she's sometimes sick after meals is because she bolts her food. We've tried giving her lots of small meals, giving her bigger pieces of food so it slows her down, giving her very mushy pate so it's easier to digest, and nothing has worked.

Since starting new foods, I've been making a note of any time she's sick. The first time was after eating Grau chicken and veal, but I didn't think much of it because she'd stolen Sam's food earlier in the day, so I thought it was because of that. The next time she had the same food, she ate it very slowly, and was sick about 15 minutes after. My OH suggested it might be the veal that is too rich for her.

Last night, she was very reluctant to eat her Animonda Carny chicken and duck. She left it after a couple of mouthfuls, so I took it away and offered her some pure beef instead, which she ate enthusiastically, and was sick about 15 minutes later. (She's had the pure beef before with no problems, and I gave it to her again today - again with no problems.)

If it is chicken that's causing her problems, I know I'll need to be very careful what I give her in future because I assume it can be a "hidden" meat in a lot of cat food, but it would be sucha relief to finally know and be able to do something about it.

Re: Allergic to chicken?

One of mine seems too have an issue with chicken (but his is regarding the other end lol) however he's ok with animonda chicken and duck. I think it only has about 10% chicken in it though. It's mainly beef.

What other foods do you feed her?

Re: Allergic to chicken?

Until recently, she was on "supermarket" brands because we didn't know any better. About a month ago, we started introducing some of the better brands available from Zooplus, and she is totally on the new food now. I think that's why I'm starting to notice which foods she reacts to - because we actually know what's in them now.

So far, she's had Animonda Carny, Grau grain free and Terra Felis (just one flavour of this). I'm waiting for delivery of some more flavours of Terra Felis and some Bozita (that she won't be able to have if it turns out she is allergic to chicken because I notice they all have chicken in).

One of the big problems we've had is that she's got on fine with certain foods for a while, then suddenly started getting sick on them, and I'm wondering now if this is because they've changed the type of meat (I'm guessing a lot of manufacturers use chicken as a base meat because it's cheap). When she is sick, it's sudden and violent, but she's generally fine to eat her next meal as long as it's something that agrees with her.

For the moment, I think I'll go with the assumption that she is allergic to chicken and only give her foods that I know are free of chicken, or that she's been fine with before. I've been looking on Zooplus, and I should be able to find plenty of options to keep her interest there without going over to some of the less easily available single protein source foods.

Re: Allergic to chicken?

I think my chicken theory is a bit simplistic. I've just realised she's been eating Orijen (which has chicken as one of its main ingredients) for a few weeks without any problems.
