Problem found in poo....
Hi All/Hobbs,
I have just heard from the vets today regarding the poo sample I took from my kitten oscar last week. After him having runny/bloody poos for a few weeks it turns out there was a prob, when he was with the cats protection as well as me. Im sorry but I cant remember the name, but this is how the vet explained it. When a kitten is stressed its immune system drops, making him very exceptable for virus's. When they go poo there is something that comes out that the kitten can catch but normally the body fights it off, in oscars case it didn't, and then when they clean themselves if they get in a mess they kind of reinfect themselves. The vet says the normal course of action is a injection a day for six days, but because oscar has actually being doing really well in last 5 days he thinks his body might be getting on top of it. Sorry if people haven't got a clue what im talking about, tried my best to pass on what vet has said, just really a update to my previous thread about bloody poos. Re: Problem found in poo....
Giardia is normally treated with oral Panacur so I'm wondering if it's Campylobacter the vet was referring to owing to the blood in stools? Could well be others as well.
I understand completely what you mean and I believe it's one of the reasons newly-acquired kittens suffer from bouts of diarrhea like this owing to the stress of a new environment etc. Quite often cats and kittens can be asymptomatic carriers of pathogens like Giardia, Salmonella etc but stress does weaken the immune system and can make any animal more susceptible to the clinical form of the diseases in question. Glad to hear he's getting over it! Sounds more like he had the acute form. |

Re: Problem found in poo....
Hey SWC, in a sense that is good news though because now you know that something other than dietary was bugging your little man.
Some cats are just very nervous and get stressed by all manner of things, so god knows what set him off. Such good news that he seems to be healing himself! Did the vet mention any probiotics to help him along a bit further? |

Re: Problem found in poo....
No not at moment, he said it would be ok if i mixed other foods to turn him off the RC sensitive but do it over 7-10 days to stop anymore stress. He was due to second lot of vacs tomorrow but the vet wants me to keep a eye on him for a couple weeks and see how he gets on, doesnt want to stress him out anymore giving anymore vacs.
