Male kittens neutered

Hi, i had my 2 male 6 month old kittens neutered this morning, and since being home, they are on cage rest but go nuts! They have quiet spells then attack their cage I'm just worried they'll hurt themselves. Also, they've been having a lick now and again and im trying my best to deter them when they do, but i have to go to sleep soon and am worried about them doing it while im sleeping. I live onmy own so have noone else to help me with it. I'll be glad when they're all healed up lol.

Re: Male kittens neutered

I've had 5 male cats neutered up until now and don't remember ever being told to keep them in cages when I got them home. I was told each time to keep them quiet for a day or so, not to let them out (indoor cats anyway) but usually they recovered very quickly without any special treatment.

Perhaps they are just going bonkers because they're feeling fine and want to get out and stretch their legs.

Has anyone else been told cage rest after neutering?

Re: Male kittens neutered

Nope... my boys were back to normal almost immediately afterwards.

They shouldnt need it Amy unless there were some complications which meant it needed to be a larger incision. Even spays dont usually advise cage rest, and it seems to be doing more harm than good at the moment...

Re: Male kittens neutered

Sounds like they want to get out and get back to their normal routine. I've never heard of cage rest post-neuter (even for females) so I would let them out! Seems like a strange suggestion to me!

Re: Male kittens neutered

Ooh, I thought they had to be on cage rest, and was worrying about my older girl, she tends to give them a nip underneath usually and i didnt want their stitches to be pulled out by either each other and her. So it'll be fine to just leave them out and about as usual? They're all indoor cats anyway.

Re: Male kittens neutered

Male kittens don't usually have stitches after neutering... did the vet say they had stitches? Monty definitely didn't. Even Dinah's stitches were internal and disolvable so there was nothing really to be pulled out.

Re: Male kittens neutered

They didn't really say alot to be honest, kinda rushed me outta there, just gave us the cats, told me to keep them still etc hence the pet carriers, and not to leave them out and food after 6pm. Miley had external stitches, i assumed the boys would have 1 or 2 but cant really see properly, they wont let me have a good look.

Re: Male kittens neutered

Alex was neutered at 5 months, he didn't have any stitches too, but he was very scared when we got him from the vet, he even wet himself a bit, shame... But this happened because he is a scared kitty around strangers and being in the vet on his own must have been hard for him.
We opened the carrier as soon as we arrived home and Alex immediately was his normal self, playing, eating and so on. He also licked the spot, but we didn't worry because everything looked normal and like I said previously, he didn't have any stitches.

I think keeping the kitties closed in the cages is making them more nervous than they are already after the surgery experience... I would probably free them and monitor their behavior and if they kept behaving aggressively or different than normal I would bring them to the vet.

I hope everything gets back to normal shortly .

Re: Male kittens neutered

I took my kitten last Monday to be "snipped". When I collected him in the afternoon the nurse said "Try to keep him quite for the rest of the day, and don't give him anything to eat til 6pm". I said, "Ok, I'll try my best". Walked through the front door, opened the carrier, he ran straight out, went up and down the stairs at top speed - twice, ran round the garden, came back in, went straight to the bowls and scoffed a load of kibbles, ran back outside, boxing 3 year old Alfie (Maine Coon) round the ears on the way and then jumped on the garden table for a quick wash round his "wound". Hmmm. Doesn't look like theres too much wrong with him then! A week on and everything has healed up and is fine

Re: Male kittens neutered

p.s. They usually just "glue" boys. No stitches required
