cats and children - worming

Hi again hope you all don't mind but I have another question I have read on afew websites that if you have young children in the house it is best to worm a cat every month incase the children catch roundworm, but this sounds a bit excessive to me considering she is going to be a house cat, it seems alot of medicine to keep giving the cat I was wondering what other people do who have children, worm every month or every 3 months?

Every 3 months, my kids actually caught tapeworm once but that was from school! Even the headteacher got it who was mightily unimpressed!!!

Personally, I would be worming the kids to protect the cats.......

Re: cats and children - worming

Mine are all housecats and i only worm before taking a queen to stud, not at any other time.

I would only worm if i saw symptoms of worms being present.

I avoid medcations in general, every month is ridiculous!!

Re: cats and children - worming

Agree^^^^^ All my cats have been house cats and apart from their initial worming courses they were only ever wormed if and when there was any signs of worms. You can if you want, get your vet to do a stool test rather than to worm .

Thats really interesting about the stool tests, how often would you recommend I get that done instead of worming, would it be just when I thought there were symptoms of worms?

I havnt actually done this yet. When Meeko was in for his boosters a couple of months ago I discussed this with my vet,who luckily is not a pushy sort of person.I had first read on the forum hobbs talking about stool tests rather than worming.I think it is just a yearly test to check the worm count(think thats the term)It probably costs more to do this than to worm ,but I'm not keen on to many chemicals.

Egg count actually, you're not looking for live worms although if you find them it's a rather obvious indicator. You can have it done as often as you want really. I did my cat when I got him just to check. You should really do 3 stool samples over consecutive days or it isn't accurate. With my last cat I had 2 days of clear samples and on the 3rd it came back as quite heavy burden of toxocara and isospora. No idea how much it costs in the UK (costs me €1.50 at uni).
