new kitten and natures menu

Hi all I am extremely excited as am getting my first ever kitten on Tuesday I went to p@h today and bought everything we will need and after alot of research on the best foods I bought a pack of natures menu pouches adult as I read on here if its a good quality high meat content then a kitten can eat the adult food, they are 100gm pouches and it says an adult cat should have 3 to 4 pouches a day. I was going to use 1 pouch per day divided into 3 meals to start with for our new addition, does that sound like it would be enough the kitten will be 9 weeks old when we get her and I didn't really want to feed dry food aswell, want to try and keep her on a wet food diet. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated

Re: new kitten and natures menu

What is she on just now as you should really keep her on that to begin with and slowly wean onto the other stuff. Also, kittens should be given an unlimited supply of wet food, and ideally fed anything between 4-8 (ideally 6-8) times a day. I tend to just refill the bowls when I notice they are empty so they have food down most of the day.

I'm not sure about the quality of Nature's Menu but lots of people on here use Animonda Carny, Grau, Smilla, Applaws and Bozita. These are good high quality foods, although I think the pate Bozita is better than the jelly and gravy. Having a rotation of the best foods is good so that they are getting the benefits of some food that others don't have. I know people on here rotate between all 5 of those foods to make sure their cat is getting the best out of each food but also so they don't get bored of the same food. These foods are available from zooplus.co.uk which lots of people on here use

Forgot to say...congrats

Re: new kitten and natures menu

Congrats on your kitten - please keep her on what she is used to until she is settled in otherwise you may get a runny bum (you may get that anyway with the stress of the move) - they very slowly mix in the new food to her old. Feed her as much as she wants - kittens often eat more than adults - by 17 week old one eats about twice what my adult cats do. I personally had a few issues with Natures Menu in that it made my cats poop stink - really stink! However, they have apparently changed the recipe recently and it now contains no added sugars so may be better. Just see how it goes.

Re: new kitten and natures menu

I always get confused between natures harvest and natures menu, but I THINK harvest is better cos I looked in PAH yesterday and the current packs of natures menu they had contained 'various sugars' and the meat content of harvest is better.

I would think a 9 week old would need more than 1 pouch a day, just play it by ear and dont limit it at first and see how much theyll eat.

Re: new kitten and natures menu

Thanks everyone for your replies, you've all been really helpful, she is currently being fed on asda's kitten pouches cannot remember the proper name so tomorrow i'm going to buy some of those ready for when she comes home then when she is settled start adding a bit of the natures menu Having a kitten sounds like feeding a baby sort of giving food on demand which I didn't really realise before so it'l be interesting to see how many pouches we get through

Re: new kitten and natures menu

Oh I have another question I forgot to ask after all the initial kitten worming phase I was going to worm her every 3 months, but I read somewhere that if you have children you should worm every month incase round worms are passed on to the children, but worming every month seems a bit excessive to me What do other people do who have kids and cats?

I've read Hobbs tell people they should be fed little and often. Obviously I didn't mean they should be fed a big meal 6 times a day, it's little and often! My kittens are 5 months old and they still eat 4 meals a day.

Re: new kitten and natures menu

Besides the low taurine I rate nature's menu pretty highly. (Add supplement taurin powder)
~70% meat (This is around the same mark as grau, granatapet, lilly's kitchen and petnatur) with only 25% offal compared to grau's 50%.

The carbs calc doesn't really work out since their %s are wrong on the packaging, but it doesn't look too bad. Calcium/Phos ratio is fine. Availability is real easy since it's at p@h, and the price is just 50p per 100g.

It ticks a lot of boxes if you ask me.
