Aaaargh they won't eat their new food

Why oh why did I place a huge order at zooplus, for food that I wrongly assumed the boys would love?!

Having lived on a dry diet all their lives, I thought they'd be soooo excited at the new and improved wet food lol! Well they liked the Animonda but went off it quickly and simply left it in the bowl. Now I've spent over £50 on Grau and Bozita but when I put the Grau down they all sniffed it then lOoked at me with their beautiful pleading eyes!!

I'm so fed up (and exhausted!) with them waking me all night hungry for food (that they wont eat) that in the end I mixed in some tuna but they still won't eat the food. I put a plate of only tuna down which they guzzled down hungrily but put it anywhere near the Grau and they look at me as though I've gone mad lol lol!!

What am I going to do?!!!? I didn't know I had such fussy kitties!!

Re: Aaaargh they won't eat their new food

Sorry I meant to add that they really are excited at the prospect of wet food, I can see in their behaviour that they really want to like it! But now they won't even touch their dry food... Do I just persevere with it? They really are being pains at night though so I'm not sure quite how long I can persevere!!

how gradually are you mixing the new food in. YOu shouldn't just change foods.

Re: Aaaargh they won't eat their new food

Well they were having totally dry food before so now I give the dry and wet. The wet they really *want* to like, honestly they are so excited about can, the smell, the whole concept, but clearly don't like the taste. I've still got their dry down but they now Won't touch that either!!

Sorry for typos, I'm using my phone which is a bit more tricky than a proper keyboard

I would start by giving them just one spoonful each per meal maybe smash up a bit of dried food and coat it with the dried to start with.

Re: Aaaargh they won't eat their new food

Mix a tiny amount in with their dry food then slowly (and I mean very slowly) increase the amount of wet and decrease the amount of dry.

If they aren't eating the dry just leave it down and they will eat it when they are hungry enough and realise they aren't getting anything else. Maybe leave down a bowl of dry and a bowl of dry with tiny bit of wet mixed in so they still have something to eat incase they really just don't like the wet stuff.

Ok thanks I'll try that and see how we go. I will keep perseveringly as I don't want all this good quality food to go to waste!

Re: Aaaargh they won't eat their new food

This is a problem that most of us face and boy is it annoying!!

My cupboards are full of Bozita cans, Smilia cans & Animonda Carny cans, none of which they will touch!!

I recommend you have at least 3 different foods and feed them on a rotational basis to prevent boredom.

It's difficult when they refuse to eat, i couldn't let them have nothing, just keep trying with different brands of good wet foods.

As for the gradual introduction of food, i find that often this doesn't work. If you have mixed something they like with something they don't they will refuse to touch it. Providing that they don't get the runs, i think it's fine just to change and i do it myself.

Once you have an established feeding routine, occasionally try the foods they refused again, sometimes they will eat them.

You can also try rolling pin squasshing the dry into a dust and putting that over the wet. It does take time to do a switch

Re: Aaaargh they won't eat their new food

Just keep trying, and as hard as it it try not to let it stress you out

I feel for you, I have the same problem with Molly only eating Gourmet, especially the beef in tomato sauce ..... but in the last week she has eaten some Animonda Carny !!!!!!!!!! Admittably not all of what was put down, but a dam sight more than any other food I have tried her with, so progress, all be it very small
