sick cat and flowers

Ruby has been sick a couple of times a day since friday night, she went to the vets tonight who said there was a slight hardness (or swelling, can't remember exactely) around her stomach and a slight temperature so she's had anti inflamatary and antibiotic injections and some food that'll be easier on her stomach. there's been no diet changes, clean food bowls no old food etc.. but my wife has just realised that we had these flowers on thursday and she was sick for the first time friday night. It's the only thing we can think of. We don't know what the white flowers are but think the pink are carnations (which i didn't think we harmful to cats).

So i wondered if anyone recognises anything in this bouquet that might have upset her stomach. She does like to sit next to them but I'm getting rid of them tonight just in case.

thanks.

Re: sick cat and flowers

they are Chrysanthemums. They are poisonous but I'm not sure what part whether it is the whole plant or just root, or to what degree they are poisonous. I would think your vet would know

Hi, can you check somewhere / ask somebody the names of the flowers? I don't think they are Chrysanthems. I've found here in a book "Catlopaedia" a list of 24 poisonous flowers. Chrysanthems are not on the list. But I'm not an expert on the topic.

SORRYYYYY, checked on-line. Chrysanthemums were not listed in this book but they are toxic. Please see the whole list of plants toxic to cats:

I'm trying to contact a friend and ask about the flowers. She will know but I am afraid she is already in bed.

Re: sick cat and flowers

Hi,

Before the flowers were composted did you check if they had been nibbled? it does seem a bit of a coincidence that she has been sick and the flowers were in house, btw the whole bouquet is poisonous, including foliage. but hopefully its only caused a mild upset tummy which will settle.

The main flower to avoid is lilies, they are highly toxic and can cause death. My hubby has given up buying me flowers lol.

Hope everything is ok with Ruby, just watch her carefully.

Izzie

Re: sick cat and flowers

thanks everyone for your replies.

I never noticed if they'd been nibbled although ruby did like smelling them and pushing her head in them. We did see Susie playing with some leaves that had fallen off but she's been fine.

Anyway after composting them last night Ruby was fine this morning, no sick anyway and nothing when we came home from work so could be coincidence could be the antibiotics so fingers crossed.
