Diabetes Insipidus

Does anyone have any experience with DI? It is looking like a contender for explaining Paddy's huge thirst and pee habit. As always the info I have found is from US sites where things are done very differently than here in uk.

Re: Diabetes Insipidus

Is this what the vet is now suggesting? Sorry PP no direct experience but as far as I'm aware this is rare in cats but more common in dogs. So I'd post in dog section as well! Also diagnosis is mainly by exclusion of other similar symptom producing illnesses.

Is Paddy still on the steroids?

Nope sorry, learnt about it briefly but in 6 years nursing have never seen a cat or dog with it.
How much is he drinking a day?

Re: Diabetes Insipidus

Ianthi.....what, a vet have ideas about diagnosis? Nah, it's my own idea. Its not the diabetes, or the FD....his kidneys are ok so it must either be DI or Cushings.
Doolally.....I have not isolated him to measure exactly, but it is a LOT. He was on a drip last night at the vets and STILL drained several large bowls of water.

I am rapidly running out of ideas, he is not improving and I am terrified I am going to lose him very soon.

Re: Diabetes Insipidus

Sorry to hear this PP. So you mean he's weeing more so now than before? Still on steroids. Not realised he's been hospitalised so what prompted this?

Of course you may well be right about the Cushings and the DI. The rarily of these in cats could also be down to the fact they're not reported. How is his general coat condition? Speak to vet about running some test now then.

Re: Diabetes Insipidus

No tests as yet for either Cushings or DI...does anyone know how they do test for these?
He spent Monday night in hospital, came home yesterday, was very flat today and then when I took him back to vet to have IV line taken out ( left in just in case ) he had explosive diarrhoea while in the waiting room. This has been going on at least since Monday. Soo, back in the vet cage he went.
He will get more fluids and ABX for a couple of days and we will go from there.
