Are they eating a lot?

My kittens are each eating about 450-500g per day, it seems like a lot to me. I'd expect it from a large breed of cat (Like MC, perhaps), but they're moggies.

They don't seem overweight or anything; when I took my two to get their vaccinations at 9 weeks, they were 1.33kg and 1.06kg. When they went back three weeks later, they were 1.90kg and 1.48kg.

I guess I'm just looking for a bit of reassurance. I don't think there is anything wrong with it but I was expecting them to eat about half that. You can't overfeed kittens, right?

Re: Are they eating a lot?

As long as they are not fat lethargic lumps, no you can't overfeed kittens IMO.

My boys went through phases where they were knocking back 800g, 600 was more normal, and now they are wavering between 200-400 depending on brand, and various things.

Re: Are they eating a lot?

until recently Darcy (moggy) was eating between 400-500g a day. Now, at almost a year old, he seems to have settled on about 100g raw mince and about the same of canned food.

Re: Are they eating a lot?

No, they're both active and neither look overweight. The only thing that had given me cause for doubt was that I didn't expect them to be eating so much. I'm going to have to place a Zooplus order sooner than I expected. I'm running out of food already lol.

Re: Are they eating a lot?

My 2 and a half year old moggies eat about 400g of tinned food each per day on average, it depends a bit on brand, so I don't think it's surprising that kittens would eat a bit more than that.

Re: Are they eating a lot?

It's perfectly normal, they're growing all the time so need extra food With kittens you are meant to give an unlimited supply of food - which I'm guessing you are doing. My two are 4 months and eat anything up to about 400g a day each - well, I say that..that's how much they've had unlimited, I suppose if they have a growth spurt they will eat more. They just haven't eaten more than 4 pouches in a day..yet! Mind you, it will probably go up once they are on better food and not supermarket crap!

Re: Are they eating a lot?

My 4 month old Ragdoll kittens eat more than my 9 month old kitten, I would say they're getting through about 400g a day each depending on brand and Arnold probably about 200g. I don't know where the little ones put it though! But then they all run around together quite a lot so I guess they must need a bit more to eat.

Re: Are they eating a lot?

When my two were kittens they would cost me a fortune in food! Spartacus wasnt too bad, she's have 400g a day... shes now down to 200g at 18months.

Hercules on the other hand could easily put away 800g a day. God knows where he put it, must have hollow legs. He would cost an absolute fortune as we were would have to do massive bulk orders to satisfy his little fattyness.

Nows he's 1, he's settled down to averaging 200, but he does have "hungry days" where we need to feed him extra, otherwise he drives you mad crying for food. Those days we feed more, but notice the day after he'll only eat a little. He still seems to be growing so we put it down to that.
