Which food would you choose
I will be picking up an 8 week old kitten on Thursday (yes I know it's too young for him to be away from mum but staying longer really isn't an option).
Having read through a number of threads (including the stickies) in this forum, I can see that the general consensus here is that wet is generally better than dry (there are always exceptions ofc).
Even before I read through that information I always knew that I wanted to feed my cat something better than what was generally available in the supermarket, and actually found this site while researching the brands being sold by most of the vets in town (like everywhere Hills & Royal Canin abound).
Intially my little man will be on Friskies (which is the non-uk brand name for Go-Cat) but that's only because that's what he's being fed by the people we're getting him from and I want to leave it at least a week before switching his food.
Amoung the local petshops & vets I am limited to the following brands of complete food:
Royal Canin, Hills (Science Plan) and IAMS, (one of the pet stores also carries a brand called Brit-Care which is Czech, but as I couldn't get any nutritional info about that I'm ruling that out).
I have been able to find 2 shops that sell the Bozita chucks in gravy/jelly tetra packs online here, so will be ordering a few to see if I can find something palatable, and while visiting last week, I noticed my local petstore also sells Appslaw cans, so those will be used as an occassional treat (1 meal per week or less).
Given the limited choices available, (I intend to keep trying to source some of the other premium brands but for now this is what I'm working with), and that it's generally agreed here that you should rotate between 2-3 brands, what would your recommendation be for 1-2 brands to use in addition to the Bozita. Btw I've looked at raw feeding and it's just not an option at this time.
With regards to Dry Food, while I do plan to feed mainly wet, I do want to get some kibble in for free grazing overnight, and if we have to be away from home for extended periods (by this I mean hours not days), and also as treats and for in puzzle balls etc.
Given these conditions, do I also need to look at rotating brands of kibble, or will 1 brand surfice (I can actually order orijen here so that's a no-brainer). If rotation is still adviced, given the above list, (hills, iams, rc) what would be the best 2nd/3rd choice.
Finally with regards to dental health - I see the recommendation is to give the cat some raw chicken wings to chew on but as a general rule those aren't readily available where I live (actually to be honest I don't think I have ever seen them in the 4 years I've been here) - the only wings that you can readily get are pre-marinated (and probably precooked for that matter - never actually checked), neither of which are appropriate. I could buy a whole chicken and just remove the wings before roasting it for hubby & I, but that would be limited to just once or possibly twice a month at most - so not really going to achieve good dental health long term. Do any of the so called dental snacks actually work, or is that just another marketing gimick, and if not what are my other options?
Thanks for all the assistance.
