Worming and Flea treatment for indoor cats

I recently got my a kitten who had already been de-wormed and de-flead. We took her to a vet after a couple of days for a check over and to see when she would next need to receive worm and flea treatment.

The vet gave us one worming tablet, saying to give half now and half in a month, but as she is to be an indoor cat and we have no other pets, that worms and fleas shouldn't be a problem and we wouldn't need anymore treatment. We didn't get given any flea treatment. Is this right? I've read on here people getting fleas with their indoor cats and I'd rather take preventative measures than wait for the problem to happen. Worms, I guess I can believe they wouldn't be a problem.

Shortly afterwards, we got another kitten, so we now have two. Does that change anything?

When I first got Meeko he was given a preventative worm and flea treatment, although he was flea free (it seemed) when he came to me.He has since then had no fleas and no flea treatments ,as for worms my vet has left that desicion to me as to whether I continue with routine worming. He is an indoor cat with no contact with other pets and I personally am not a fan of chemicals where not necessary.

Re: Worming and Flea treatment for indoor cats

I have to say, worming and flea-ing (or whatever it's called!) confuses the life out of me, as our vet said ours should be done monthly until 6 months old, then after 3 months thereafter. I think that's way too often, especially as they haven't been outside yet. Ours were done once at 12 weeks, once at 8 weeks and again at 19 weeks. I'm really not keen to give them it again if it's not necessary and to be honest I don't think it is.

Re: Worming and Flea treatment for indoor cats

I worm mine 3 monthly. They are indoor but still it's a good precaution to take. One of mine passed a huge roundworm the second time they were wormed by me and they've been indoor since I had them so presumably he'd had worms since before. That was the second time I'd wormed him and I know his fosterer had wormed him twice too but always with tablet so I think he'd somehow not taken them. Last time I wormed I used the granules and they were very easy to mix in food.

I'm not flea treating though. Haven't seen any and they are indoor so I'll deal with it if and when it happens I think.

Re: Worming and Flea treatment for indoor cats

We don't routinely worm and flea treat, although we did have to treat both Sam and Milly for fleas when we brought Eva into the house. It is possible that Sam could pick up fleas when he comes in the garden with us, but we deal with that if it happens. Milly is very sensitive to fleas, so she soon lets us know if there are any about. Eva had bad worms when we first found her, so we'll worm her regularly for a few months until we're at least pretty sure she's clear.

Re: Worming and Flea treatment for indoor cats

I de-flea monthly from March to October only. Fleas are less of an issue in the colder months so I don't bother then.

Worming I tend to do 3 times a year - every 4 months'ish. I am not fanatical about it and, to date, haven't ever had any problems in this area.

I try to keep the chemicals to a minimum but flea treatments is a must where I live in the summer as Merson likes to go adventuring and I don't live in the prettiest of areas.
