Exclamation Flea Advice

Hi

I have two cats; one persian, Chewie and one BSH x, Lol. I've recently discovered that they have fleas. I've not seen any fleas but they both have the droppings in their coat, Chewie more than Lol. Upon realising this, I treated them with Bob Martin Spot on Flea and Tick repellent. I've also hoovered and given them a good groom and seem to have got a lot of the droppings out.

I am now wondering if this will kill the fleas at all? Also I've seen Bob Martin does a double action spot on which seems like the product I should have gone with in the first place. Would it be ok to treat them with that now or would that cause an overdose?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Flea Advice

Bob Martin is useless and can cause your cat/s health problems!! It can cause a nasty reaction and even result in death! I would say NEVER buy the petshop stuff as its rubbish ALWAYS go to the vets for flea and worm products!! You may not be able to use anything more on the cats for a couple of weeks now but deffo go to vets and get advice and decent products!

Re: Flea Advice

Hi, I had a biiiiiig flea problem this summer with my ...only indoor cats. Now it's everything fine but you should see me hoovering in the summer.
As Kittenfostermummy said, it's worth buying high quality flea products and best ask the vet if not sure.
I bought Frontline for my two cats and a spray for the carpet and flat. In my case, the longhair carpet acts like a big cat on the floor, just perfect for fleas. They loved it.

The first treatment was more or less unsuccessful as I sprayed the carpet with "Defest" spray and it was not that good. (What I was told in Pets@Home.) "Staykill" was much better as it kills adult fleas, eggs and larvea.
After the first month I still had fleas and hoovering only didn't help. I'm not a big fan of chemicals but I really had to spray the carpet, cat tree, cat bedding and my flat.
In the 2nd month, after waiting 5 weeks between cat treatments, I put again Fronline spot-on and AT THE SAME TIME treated the surroundings. Additionally, I bought a flea powder for the carpet, just to make fleas life more difficult.

If you want to be 100% sure that you don't have any fleas in your house buy a "Flea Killer"
Flea Killer Trap - YouTube
or have a look on Youtube at other homemade flea traps.

To sum up, use good/save stuff for you cats and treating of your house is so important as treating cats.

Ask if you have more questions

Re: Flea Advice

From personal experience, I have found the best product for fleas is Advocate and this is available from your vet or on-line with a vets prescription.

Frontline no longer works on all animals and I had this problem. Advocate, however, is very good AND it also treats the areas where the cats go so there is no need to spray your home. I have three cats - one is long haired and likes to go out and bring home pets - but I haven't seen ANY fleas at all this summer since I started to use it.

It also prevents ear mites and a large selection of worms - but not all so I still give a proper wormer every 3 months.

I hope this information is helpful for you. I would not, however, advise Bob Martins for ANYTHING.

Re: Flea Advice

Hi

I had a huge flea problem last year with my indoor cat (kitten then when she was a few months old!), and suffered over a 100 bites on my body at one stage, itched like mad!!!

I became obsessive and Little Miss Messi was treated, the house was treated with sprays and bombs in every room, and one days 2 weeks later....shhh...no new bites!!!! The flea issue has been sorted!!!!

This year we had no problems and everyone is happy

I would say follow everyone's advice here and used the best products and follow the instructions, and go all out with it, and be patient, it will all be worth it. It's definitely worth spending good money on!

Good luck!

X

Exactly. Get Advocate, the only thing you'll regret is not getting it sooner!

Re: Flea Advice

How about Stronghold? It's easy to apply on cats, and it removes parasites from the fur, skin (internal ears) and with good effect against certain internal worms or other parasites.

The price (in Ro) is similar to that of Frontline, but the difference between the two is huge, in favour of the product I have recommended.

Re: Flea Advice

Oh, now I see the Advocate (I knew about this only for dogs). How is Advocate compared to Stronghold? From the description, I understand they are almost similar?

Re: Flea Advice

Thank you for all your advice and recommendations. Yeah I think Frontline is the way forward.

Is it worth getting a flea spray for them now or should I just leave it a few weeks for this Bob Martin stuff to wear off? They seem to still be itching

They look as though they both do pretty much the same job. Personally though, I'm not too keen on the 'one size fits all' for their dosage though. I like that Advocate do two options depending on the size of the cat.
