Sprats & squid- type used for bait?

Can the cats have these as part of their raw diet, hubby suggested it but I wanted to check they're OK

Are these fresh sprats? Frozen? Fresh squid? Frozen? In either case, as long as they haven't been marinaded but are as nature intended, then yes, they will be fine to feed your cats.

Raw fish is a nice occasional healthy treat. There are some types of fish that are best frozen first to kill off any potential parasites but once a week or once every second week is more than acceptable!

In the op you quote squid the type used for bait? if im correct squid for "bait" usually comes in 7lb frozen blocks and i always thought it stated on the pack unsuitable for human consumption, for what reasons ive no idea so if this is what you refer too then myself i would be wary of feeding this to my cats........hope this helps.........Chris

Thanks for that Chris, just asked him & he said the squid from the fishmongers is but from the fishing tackle shop isn't, so I'll use the fishmongers

Hi, when you said " the type used for bait" then i assumed you meant the stuff that fishing tackle shops sell, ...im sure that fresh squid from a fishmonger will be fine, the squid thats packaged for fishing bait is usually the stuff that hasnt sold at fishmarkets and has prob be laying around in a fish box for a couple of days, when ive used this as bait and de-frosted it sometimes it can have a bit of a nose to it lol. best wishes........Chris.

Re: Sprats & squid- type used for bait?

Is dried squid (intended for human consumption) okay for cats as a natural dental chew treat? My cats will chomp on Fish4Dogs jerky squares quite happily, as well as dried sprats and dried chicken strips intended for dogs, and as it's so low in fat and you can see the good it's doing their teeth and jaws, I wondered if anyone knew whether squid was okay too? Noticed some in a local Asian food shop/grocery store, and it's a lot cheaper than treats made specifically for animals, so if it's fine I thought I might see what they think of it. (Obviously I'll have to check whether it has been seasoned or marinated first.) Thoughts?
