Unless he has any kidney problems etc I don't think you really need to change the wet food, as long as it's a good quality one

But seven is not an age! Forget about the food PR from certain pet food companies, which would condemn your cat to being a OAP for the majority of his life. Instead, as Missye said, feed him a good quality wet food.

Re: when should i swap my older cats to senior food

thank you for replying they're fed on whiskers meat or kitekat. they tend to have stages where they go off one, and back on the other. are these considered suitable meats or should i be looking at something else? i did consider swapping them to a raw diet when i swapped opie over, but when i put some down they left it.

Lots of people will tell you Whiskas and Kitekat and most supermarket shelf brands are pretty poor. And I'll agree. Read the sticky thread by Hobbes on wet and dry foods. There is a ton of infomation. Another good, if a little biased read, is a white paper by Orijen: http://files.championpetfoods.com/OR...hite_Paper.pdf - in fact anything on this page: Champion Petfoods | Library

Cats are evolved to be obligate carnivores - i.e. meat / protein and not grains, cereals and the like.

For supermarket shelf stuff I feed mine Butchers Choice which they love but I still think of it as "fast food". It contains no grain though.

My three are currently on as much Orijen dry as they like and between two and three 400g tins (between three cats) of any of Smilia (Zooplus own brand), Schmuszy (sp?), Grau, Butchers Choice etc. Pet Supplies, Pet Food, Dog Food, Cat Food and Pet Accessories at Zooplus is an excellent source of online food - buy in bulk though

Re: when should i swap my older cats to senior food

Hi,
After reading many interesting threads in this forum and some info online, I've started to feed my cats (10 and 7 years) only wet food: raw food + Bozita.
You should see the difference in their fur quality. My older cat's lost weight too although I never thought it could be possible.

Cats are cats - there're no birds or mice in the nature for kittens or seniors cats. All the senior / kitten / longhair / shorthair ... food is only a clever marketing trick.

Re: when should i swap my older cats to senior food

Have to concur with all other posts - if you feed a decent wet food, there's no need to worry about feeding by age.

I recently changed over from Royal Canin to the brands mentioned above, from Zooplus, and the difference in the quality of my three cats coats and weight is amazing. My 13yr old Oscar had been a bit porky before but he has now slimmed down and is nice & trim again. His coat is beautifully soft too.

As a newbie myself to these foods, I cannot tell you how surprised you will be when you see the difference in quality from Whiskas & Felix the minute you open the tin. You could almost put in a pie and eat it yourself it is SOOOOO meaty!!!

I agree with what has been said - feed a good quality pet food and you won't have to worry about their age. I have an 8 year old and a 13 year old and according to the pet food companies' hype they should both be on senior foods. The boys themselves disagree! If I try to feed them senior food of ANY brand they know and won't touch it.

Feed them well and they will be fine. If they start to have any issues with age, it's best to talk to a vet rather than worry about what Whiskas says about feeding.

Take care
